College Diversity Roundtable Meeting Minutes
11/10/2008
Presentation: Latino Climate at the University of Rochester
 UR students Catherine Laureano and Estefany Angeles gave a presentation about the
climate for Latino students
 COFHE statistics used to compare UR to other schools
 No change in faculty representation at UR between 2001 and 2007
 Latin American Studies minor under-publicized; enough courses for a major
 Lack of College sponsored events: Latino Professional Alliance submitted a list of
possible events to the CDR and college administration without results
 No established alumni organization for Latinos
 Student recommendations:
o Provide programming during Latino Heritage Month
o Create a Latino Alumni Association
o Events promoting diversity during orientation specifically focused on Latino
students
 Discussion:
o Dean of Students Rich Feldman: There have been students who have been Latin
American Studies Majors; he will look at how their degrees were put together.
He will also look into a Latin American Alumni Association
o Lydia Crews from Student Activities: Cultural Groups are charged with creating
awareness and celebration of culture. Students should consider pooling
resources when trying to fund events as it can be hard to find funding for smaller
events.
Subcommittee Reports
 Communications/marketing: working with events calendar, CDR website and
disseminating new brochure
 Climate Survey dissemination committee- planning a day of events 1/19/2009- online
registration and OUCH! Training; 4 sessions: harassment, classroom climate, admissions
and Q&A about the survey. A poetry slam will end the event.
