Directions: Lana is planning a garden. She would like her
garden in the shape of a square with sides 10 feet each.
Around the outside of the garden Lana is going to place a
decorative tile border using tiles that are 1 foot squares.
How many tiles will she need?
Lana decided to make the garden larger by expanding the garden size to 12 feet by 12
feet. How many tiles will she need for the border on the larger garden?
Using ‘S’ to represent the length of the side of the garden, write an expression that would
find the number of tiles needed for a square garden with sides equal to ‘S’. Make sure
you include an explanation with necessary computations, sketches, formulas, and notes.
Suppose Lana changes her plan and instead wants a rectangular garden 6 feet by 8 feet.
How many tiles will she need?
How many tiles for a garden 10 feet by 9 feet?
Using ‘L’ to represent the length of the garden and ‘W’ to represent the width, write an
expression that would find the number of tiles needed for a rectangular garden with
dimensions ‘L’ and ‘W’. Make sure you include an explanation with necessary
computations, sketches, formulas, and notes.
Extension: If Lana changes the border so it is two tiles wide
all the way around, what would the expressions for the
square and rectangular gardens be?
