Pros:
 All four years of courses considered when applying; last two years focused on a field that excites student and
will likely improve GPA compared to the first two years.
 Opportunity to improve science GPA in senior year with advanced course work and to increase involvement in
relevant co-curriculars or research.
 Flexibility to spread out challenging courses for major and pre-health requirements.
 Stronger letters of recommendation from professors who have supervised thesis work and interacted with
student in smaller classes.
 Allows a full summer of MCAT study with the option to re-take it if necessary.
 Allows Study Abroad program in fall of senior year or summer of freshman/ sophomore years.
Cons:
 Students worry that a break between academic programs will make the transition to medical school difficult.
Other students find this break beneficial before gearing up for the rigor and timeline of medical school.
 Necessary to find glide year one-year programs/opportunities. Often can be a time of significant opportunity
and growth and medical schools typically look favorably upon the more mature student.

Study and take summer MCAT
Apply by
June 1st
Matriculate by end
of Summer
Pros:
 Extra year to spread out and to concentrate on obtaining higher grades in pre-requisite courses.
 Likely higher GPA and stronger recommendation letters.
 Allows participation in summer Study Abroad programs.
 For students who need to enhance their academic record, this plan allows for enrollment in post-baccalaureate
programs.
 Allows a full summer of MCAT study with the option to re-take it if necessary.
Cons:
 If students choose to enroll in post-baccalaureate programs for their glide year(s), they can be expensive.
 Students become ineligible to receive a health committee letter if they enroll in a post-baccalaureate program
(or other graduate program). Students will instead receive letters of recommendation from their most recent
program of study.

Notes: Some students will be concerned that this schedule does not give them the FULL year of inorganic
chemistry w/ lab that is usually listed as a pre-requisite for medical schools. Students should know that in order to
place into CHM 171 as a freshman, the student has already demonstrated competency with the material covered in
introductory chemistry. Medical schools strongly discourage students from repeating course work merely to
fulfill general guidelines. Following the CHM 171  CHM 172  CHM 211 BIO 250 is designed to fill in any gaps.
Pros:
 Direct entry to medical school can be less expensive.
 Begin medical career at a slightly younger age.
 No need to spend time to investigate and apply to glide year programs/jobs/activities.
Cons:
