Issues in Multicultural Education EDCI 5450 [EDCI Common Assessment for C & I Master’s Outcome #4] Assignment Description and Scoring Guide Considering “Others”: A Critical Multicultural Case Study Oral Presentation: Project Paper: 5 minutes 20 page paper graduate, 10 page undergraduate. Paper Description: Links to UW College of Education, Curriculum & Instruction standard #4) Democratic Commitment: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between schooling and the complex process of democracy and a commitment to pursue this process with a focus on access to quality education for all learners in their own professional work. In preparation for becoming a “reflective and culturally responsive teacher,” this paper asks you to consider how schools inhibit or assist students in becoming a part of a democratic society. It will also challenge you to create new ways in which access to education improves for all learners. The research question/s should be related to issues we address in the course (multicultural education, diversity, ethnicity, race, gender, sexism, etc.) and be one that the literature does not address directly (meaning, there are holes in the argument which you will attempt to fill). In doing this, you will need to: ask critical question/s about your area of interest, review the literature to learn what others have to say about the question/s, outline the educational implications of how your research makes a contribution to the existing research and make recommendations to educators based on your findings and conclusions. Please discuss your topic with the instructor before moving forward with your plan. In addition to your question, you will interview at least two adults who belong to the particular group directly or indirectly affected by the question/s you are researching. These people should be members of a marginalized group in which you are NOT a member. This added source of data (the interview/case study) will enrich your paper and bring a personal experience to the issue. Consider all sources of data (group and individual) as you analyze the interview responses in light of the information collected. You will then present and discuss your findings based on what you found/created. Your paper shall not exceed 20 pages-graduates, 10 pages undergraduates, 12 point font, double spaced, reference page, and should follow APA format. You will need the approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to contacting your perspective participants for interviewing (instructor to assist in this process). For the purpose of this course I will submit an IRB proposal for the entire course. However, if you plan to use this information in your future research, or if you plan to interview minors or other protected classes, you need to submit your own IRB proposal. The procedure to obtain IRB approval will assist you in your development as a scholar. (100 points total) Rev. 5/4/09 Content 50 pts.
