WILLITS ETHICS AWARD
FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS
SUMMER 2015
Due to the gracious support of the Garber family, three awards of $3,000 each will be made to University of
Wyoming students, at any academic level, for summer projects in research or creative endeavor that involve a
substantial ethics component. The research can be conducted individually or collaboratively, under sponsorship
and supervision of a faculty member.
The purpose of this award is to encourage and assist students, in any discipline in the university, who are
considering, beginning or in the midst of a research or creative activity, to include a substantial ethics
component.
SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS:
Preference will be given to projects that:

Concentrate on a well-defined ethical problem;
Make a positive contribution to solving an ethical problem;
Have a substantial, clear, developed, relevant, and concrete ethics component;
Utilize a process or methodology for investigation and research;
Are of consequence, and have potential benefit to others;
Are feasible, capable of completion in one summer;
Are original, the students’ own research rather than a segment of faculty research;
Use the funds for project essentials;
Have a strong faculty letter of recommendation.
ELIGIBILITY:
1) Undergraduate and Graduate Students need to be enrolled for a minimum of one credit hour during the
summer.
2) The recipients must present their research to the university community in Academic Year 2015-16. This
might be a departmental colloquium, or a graduate student conference, or the undergraduate research
days.
3) Past recipients of this Independent Study award are not eligible.
SCHEDULE
Deadline for applications: Tues., April 21, 2015 by noon. Bring all of your materials in one packet to
Clayleen Rivord in the Philosophy Department office, Ross Hall 122.
Announcement of Awards: In writing by May 4th, 2015 (please do not make telephone inquiries)
Research: Summer, 2015
Report Due: Fall, 2015 (date TBA). The recipient is committed to submit to the Philosophy Department a
signed written report (and an electronic copy to Clayleen Rivord at CRivord@uwyo.edu ) on the results
of his or her project along with a brief signed review and comment by the faculty sponsor. A copy of the
report and the faculty review also needs to be submitted to your department.

Please give your letter, in a sealed and signed envelop, to the student to submit with his or her application.
Please note that the deadline for applications and letters of support is April 21, 2015 and that late
applications and/or support letters are grounds for disqualification of the student’s application.
The primary purpose of these awards is to assist and encourage students to incorporate a substantial ethics
component in a research or creative activity. Your comments, therefore, might include consideration of such
things as the promise or potential of the ethics component, its importance, how it fits into the broader project (if
relevant), its value to the applicant and to the discipline, and any reservations you may have concerning the
project or the student's ability to carry it out.
