EXEMPTION FROM FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT F-1 AND J-1 STUDENT VISAS To maintain F-1 and J-1 student status, international students must be enrolled in a full course of study each fall and spring semester (summer enrollment is optional). For undergraduates, full-time enrollment is considered to be 12 hours. Graduate students are required to be enrolled in 9 hours. There are valid academic and medical reasons for enrolling less than full-time, as listed below, but these must be approved through SEVIS prior to enrollment for less than full-time. Please complete the following form and have your academic adviser sign the bottom section. This will clarify any question regarding your enrollment status. ************************************************************************* Surname: Given Name: W#: W_________________________ SEVIS #: Visa Type: F-1 ______ J-1 ______ Email Semester/Year: Fall 20______ Degree Program: Bach. ____ Master's ____ Ph.D. ____ Spring 20_____ Major: Credit Hours Telephone: Indicate why you are enrolled less than full-time: _____ Initial difficulties with the English language or improper course level placement (Documentation required) No advisor signature needed. _____ Medical / Mental Health reason (please attach documentation) – No advisor signature needed. _____ Undergraduate student - last semester of required course work - Provide a letter from your Degree Analyst in the Office of the Registrar for verification of your pending graduation. _____ Graduate student - Graduate students must complete the Optional Fee Package and submit it to the Office of the Registrar if you are registered for less than full-time (9 credit hours), in addition to completing and submitting this form to ISS. If you are registered for less than 9 credit hours, the University of Wyoming, and therefore the USCIS and SEVIS, will consider you to be full-time if you are eligible to complete the Optional Fee Package. Graduate students who are eligible for the Optional Free Package must be registered for full-time (9 credit hours) to be considered full-time and in legal status with USCIS regulations and SEVIS requirements. Please see ISS if you have other situations that affect your full-time status. Please note: The U. S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) does not consider financial difficulties as a valid reason for enrolling less than full-time. Also, according to USCIS regulations, students who are not considered to be full-time may not be employed on or off-campus. I hereby certify that the academic reason for less than full-time enrollment is correct. Academic Adviser: Telephone: Adviser’s Signature: Date: Revised 10/30/2015
