Academic Advisor (Undergraduate)
Position Summary. The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is seeking candidates for an Academic Advisor (50%),
which also includes two additional components: Performing the duties of a Livestock Judging
Coach (35%) and lecturing in the area of farm animal management (15%).
Applicants must demonstrate excellent communication and public relation skills, as they are
required to interact continually with students, parents, and the public. The preferred candidate
will have experience working with diverse students. Incumbent will be expected to participate

Duties & Responsibilities. Advise students on matters ranging from developing academic
plans to academic policy, career options and student engagement opportunities. Refer
students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with
academic, personal, and career counseling, academic skills development, and financial aid
support. Support a variety of programs aimed at student recruitment, retention, major selection,
student involvement and general community building activities with students. Maintain student
files, records, and databases; document all pertinent student information; update UAccess
regarding changes to student status and perform data analysis as necessary. Participate in
professional development activities. Lecture undergraduate and laboratory classes in the areas
of farm animal management and animal evaluation. Coach students involved in intercollegiate
livestock evaluation and fund-raising activities to help support the livestock judging team. Serve
as the advisor to our undergraduate club and coach students involved in intercollegiate
livestock evaluation competition and will participate in student recruitment for the team.
Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications.
 Bachelor’s degree in a field related to area of assignment (such as Animal Science,
Agricultural Education, or a related field) AND one year academic advising experience; OR,
Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
 Experience in livestock judging and coaching livestock judging teams.
 Extensive experience working with cattle, swine, goats, and sheep.
 Possess a valid driver’s license upon employment.

 Knowledge of advising practices and principles.
 Experience with data analysis.
 Experience working with college-aged students
 Experience working with diverse students.
 Proficiency with software programs and applications such as Microsoft Office (PowerPoint,
Word, Excel, Access) and student management databases like PeopleSoft.
