Purpose:
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension invites applications for a full-time, fiscal-year,
continuing contract eligible faculty appointment as Assistant Extension Professor - Extension
Livestock Educator, effective July 1, 2016. This position will be housed at the University of Maine in
Orono and will affiliate with the Maine Food & Agricultural Center on campus. This position will
develop and conduct educational programs and applied research projects throughout the state with
an emphasis on livestock enterprises. The livestock industry in Maine which this position will
address is comprised of beef, sheep, goat, swine, and poultry producers. An Extension Educator
works with other Extension faculty, advisory boards and commodity associations to offer programs
addressing the educational needs of Maine livestock industries.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:



















Provides leadership in developing the livestock industries in Maine in collaboration with
commodity groups and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry.
Designs and implements a Plan-of-Work that addresses high priority issues facing Maine
livestock producers including conducting educational programs for livestock producers in
health, nutrition, meat science, small farm management, and sustainable farming practices.
Provides timely and accurate information in response to public requests for information.
Designs and delivers workshops, field days, newsletters, fact sheets, webinars, videos and
short courses that enhance client knowledge in livestock production.
Builds additional capacity among Extension colleagues in livestock management.
Develops an applied research program that addresses priority needs of livestock industries.
Supervises support staff as needed.
Compiles reports as requested, including annual civil rights, Plan of Work and program
accomplishments.
Works as part of a multi-discipline team in developing and maintaining a working relationship
involving the School of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture at the University of Maine.
Develops and maintains a working relationship involving the Maine Agriculture and Forest
Experiment Station.
Works with volunteer advisory committees and livestock associations.
Contributes skills and insights for effective office and program management.
Provides cooperative multi-state and integrated programming.
Seeks ways to reach under-served and under-represented livestock producers.
Contributes to overall Cooperative Extension marketing initiatives as part of an individual
plan of work.
Seeks external funding to support educational programming. Manages grants and contracts
received according to the expectations of the funder and UMaine.
Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual
respect.
Provides support to 4-H animal science commodity committees.
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Required:














An earned Masters Degree in an area of animal science or related field.
Strong background in livestock nutrition.
Background in farm business management.
Background in livestock production.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills for working with co-workers, employers, and
constituents of the community.
Experience conducting applied research.
Demonstrated effective oral, written, and electronic communication skills.
Knowledge or experience in acquiring external grants and contracts.
Demonstrated skills in performing hands-on work including livestock handling with multiple
livestock species including beef, sheep, goats, swine, poultry and/or camelid.
Independent as well as team work skills. Must be self-motivated and directed with the ability
to achieve measurable results.
Demonstrated computer and educational technology skills.
Demonstrated skills in developing and delivering educational programs.
Ability to occasionally lift 30 to 50 pounds.
Ability to travel, normally requiring a valid driver's license, both in- and out-of state, with
reimbursement at the University contract rate.
Preferred:








A Doctoral Degree in an area of animal science, veterinary science or related field.
Experience conducting applied research in the livestock industry.
Experience in livestock producer education.
Background in meat science.
Experience in commercial livestock production emphasizing decision-making skills for
improved profitability.
Experience in Extension educational process.
Experience working with diverse audiences and supporting civil rights, equal opportunity and
affirmative action policies.
Experience in supervision.
Appropriate background checks are required.
