How it should be submitted
Important notes
This form should be passed to the Head of Department, Programme
Leader or ARC Research Degrees Co-ordinator, for submitting to the
Research Degrees Office with the Exam panel nomination form.
External examiners must provide a copy of proof of their right to work in
the UK as described below.
To be eligible for the role of exam panel chair, a nominee is normally
required to have examined at least one UK PhD. Nevertheless, as the
chair does not examine the thesis, the exam panel chair’s experience
does not count toward the examiners’ collective experience.
Right to work in the UK – directly registered programme only
The Open University is required by law to ensure that anyone appointed
to undertake work on its behalf has the right to work in the UK. You are
asked to provide a copy (scanned copy or photocopy) of your passport
or other form of documentation with this form. Before the examination
takes place, we ask that you also visit the Research Degrees office in
Milton Keynes to show us your original documents for checking.
Alternatively, you can present your documents at any of the Open
University’s regional or national centres before the date of the
examination (an appointment is normally required). For UK citizens and
EA nationals, the preferred form of documentation is a passport; further
guidance on acceptable forms of documentation, and who to contact, is
on the Virtual Research Environment at
http://www.open.ac.uk/students/research/content/forms/externalexaminers-and-external-supervisors-eligibility-work-united-kingdom
Thank you for your assistance – we value your anticipated work as an
examiner and we trust you understand the need to meet the
requirements of the legislation.
This procedure does not apply to anyone supervising a student
registered through the ARC programme – Affiliated Research Centres
are responsible for ensuring compliance with the legislation for any
person appointed directly by them.
