Sharon works in a bookstore where she has been
allotted $22,500 to purchase either hard-cover
books at $12 each, or soft-cover books at $3 each,
or some combination of both. If Sharon decides to
buy a total of 4,500 soft and hard cover books,
how many hard-cover books and soft cover books
can she purchase?
The sum of Sally’s age plus twice Tomas’ age is
12. The difference of Sally’s age and Tomas’ age
is 3. Write and solve a system of equations
algebraically and graphically to find their ages.
Interpret the solution.
Drill: Answer the following questions: Write a
system of equations in terms of two variables that
can be used to help solve the problem. Make sure

1) Margie is responsible for buying a week’s
supply of food and medication for the dogs and
cats at a local shelter. The food and medication
and for each dog cost twice as much as those

medication?
2) Elaine bought a total of 15 shirts and pairs of
pants. She bought seven more shirts than pants.
