Tips on Presenting Your Science Research Experiment
Your presentation should include the following information on Note Cards (that I will check) and should follow the
order listed below. Good Luck!
1. Purpose
 Start your presentation with a statement (HOOK) that will grab the judges’ attention.
 Use specific statistics and facts from your article reviews to support your purpose
 Explain why your problem is important and why the judge should care about what you have to say (How
can this problem affect me? Long Island? New York? United States? World?)
 State or talk about real world/current examples of the issue/problem
2. Problem
 Clearly state the problem in a way that can be tested
3. Background Information
 Talk about at least 3 other studies related to your project
o Identify similarities and differences between these studies and yours
o How did these studies help you come up with the idea for your study
o Give specific statistics (#’s with units) about what these studies concluded
 Explain all major scientific principals related to your idea
o (Example: if your project was affected by friction then discus what friction is here)
o Point to and explain any images or diagrams you put on your board that you copied from the
internet
4. Hypothesis
 Clearly state hypothesis.(Example: It is hypothesized that as pH increases mercury contamination levels
measured by % of light transmittance will decrease
 Must be base it on previous research that you read about. “According to a study done by Jones in 2013…”
5. Experimental Design
 Clearly state the independent variable, dependent variable and control group.
 State all factors that remained constant and units used to measure
 Explain how you measured and recorded your data
 Point to and explain any pictures you took of your design (mention all materials/equipment used)
 Discuss sample size, number of trials
6. Results
 Was your hypothesis supported or refuted?
 What happened? Be specific, include your exact numbers with units
 Show the judges your graphs/tables/pics to visualize your results.
5. Reflection/Discussion
 Mistakes, errors, things you would do differently? Why? (Strengths and weaknesses of your design)
 Are your results valid? Why or Why not?
 Discuss relationships (patterns) or lack of relationships between variables (why do you think this occurred
based on scientific principles)
 Compare your results to other studies done previously.
 Future research?
 How is your study significant?
 Discuss real world applications of your research
Other tips:
 Tell a complete story about your experiment.
 Make sure the judges can understand you.
 Be prepared. Practice your presentation as many times as possible!
 Be enthusiastic! Show interest in your experiment.
 KNOW YOUR RESEARCH/BACKGROUND INFORMATION. If the judges ask you about it, would you be able
to answer their questions?
Good Luck!!!!!
