Overview of Process
1) Submit completed form to BSISC co-chairs electronically
2) BSI Steering Committee reviews the proposal and either approves it or sends it back for further
clarification. If approved, an electronic copy of the proposal is forwarded to the department chair, area
administrator, and Human Resources Department.
3) UDWC reviews approved proposals to assure compliance with UPM contract.
4) BSISC representative notifies project leader when work can proceed.
5) Personnel Action Forms (PAFs) are completed for all participants.
6) Timecards are submitted by approved participants for work.
7) Project leader writes a concluding report.

Best practices or recent educational research that inform this project
BSI funds cannot be used for anything the college is already doing and the initiative is strongly rooted in
research about the most effective practices being implemented in the field. Explain how your project will
implement one of the best practices and how it will help to achieve one of the goals or activities listed in COM’s
current BSI Action Plan (ctrl+click to see plan, or see summary below):
Long-term goals

Increase the percentage of students who begin at 3 levels below college level English, and successfully complete
college level English within four years by 5% annually in 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 over 2010-2011.

Increase the percentage of students who begin at 3 levels below college level math, and successfully complete
college level math within four years by 5% annually in 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 over 2010-2011.

Improve the non-credit and credit ESL programs and develop effective support programs to support the
educational and occupational goals of our students.
Activities

Accelerated Pathway Center – An investigation into alternative models for basic skills English and math

Development of an alternative path to college-level math for non-stem majors

Support development of placement test preparation models, increase collaboration with summer bridge partners

Research the non-credit and credit ESL student population to assess their short and long term goals.

Support researching the accuracy of COM math, English, and Credit ESL placement tests, and the impact of using
multiple measures

Assessment
Please explain how the project will be assessed, and remember to include any assessment costs in your

Requested Funds
Provide a break out by faculty paid time, supplies & materials, other expenses. Requested amount must be
specific and include all expenses related to the proposal, including costs related to assessment and project
summary.
Dissemination
Please explain how the outcomes of the project will be shared with departments, divisions, or the campus community.
This may include a variety of methods – department or division meetings, department or college website, flex day
activities, and/or others. A final report that briefly documents the project, its results and the outcomes is required as part
of the funding. All reports are shared with the college community on the COM BSI webpage.
