What is a Guidance Counselor? Today’s Guidance Counselor is a highly trained mental health professional who must hold a Master’s Degree in order to work in a New York State public school. They are dedicated, caring individuals who are experts in how children and adolescents grow and change, especially in the way they think, solve problems and make decisions. They are your child’s first line of defense – their GO TO person – for any concern or issue during their years at H. Frank Carey. Teachers may change, but your child’s Guidance Counselor will remain a steady source of support for your child and a constant resource for your family. What Can I Talk to My Counselor About? Anything. Everything. Counselors are active listeners that can assist your child and family with ~~ Personal Problems that can affect your child’s attitude and performance at school; Social Issues such as how to deal with peer pressure or bullying; Academics including course selection and ways to improve study skills; and Future Planning because the future begins today! They assist in college planning and work with students headed to the job market or the military. Counselors work one on one, in small groups and in the classroom developing character, social skills and basic knowledge for your child to succeed in the world. Summary of Services INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING One on one sessions with a student to discuss particular issues and concerns using therapeutic interventions. Frequency: weekly, monthly or as needed. POST HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING College pre-planning, use of web-based college search agents, and assistance with the college application process. GROUP WORK A spectrum of adolescent topics including study skills, social skills, character education, divorce, bereavement and other group activities. CAREER EXPLORATION Computer based programs and interest inventories to help a student explore and learn about different career choices Our College and Career Center is another resource where students can find reference For those entering the materials related to the college workforce following search process as well as graduation, we provide strategies necessary to find a occupational investigation. job including resume writing and interviewing techniques. STANDARDIZED TESTING Information and coordination of Advanced Placement Examinations, the PSAT, SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests and the ACT. Specialty courses are offered to prepare students for these high stakes exams. REFERRALS Assessment of therapeutic needs resulting in consultation with school social workers and psychologists. Recommendations for outside resources provided, as needed. ANNUAL REVIEWS Parent-student conferences to review current academic progress, future course selections, career exploration and post-high school planning. Any other issues of concern are also open for discussion. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Professional programs and workshops provided to educate parents on a wide variety of subjects pertinent to adolescent growth and development.
