Students will develop the writing, speaking, and presentation skills necessary to be successful in any field. This is a mandated course for students pursuing a five-unit Business Education. BUSINESS LAW Students will learn and apply the fundamental principles of law that involve an individual’s personal and occupational life. With the use of the Internet, presentations from guest speakers, courtroom field observations, in-class mock trials, and video cases, students will explore legal issues pertaining to contract law, crimes, torts, warranties, agents, landlord/tenant agreements, court procedures, and corporate law. Juniors and seniors may earn three college credits from Long Island University. COLLEGE ACCOUNTING Students will acquire the skills necessary to record transactions, prepare financial statements, and record the decisions made by management. Accounting practices and principles will be taught for the three major forms of business organizations. Juniors and seniors may earn six college credits from Long Island University. COLLEGE MARKETING The fall semester will focus on business ownership and management. Students will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to open and run a successful business. The spring semester will give students insight into how to create, market, and sell a product to consumers. Juniors and seniors may earn six college credits from Long Island University. COLLEGE NOTETAKING College Notetaking will provide college-bound students with the ability to take notes using an abbreviated method. Students will develop transcription skills and, upon completion, will have acquired entry-level placement skills. WEBPAGE DESIGN Want to learn how to design Web pages? Want to learn how to add pizzazz to your site using animation? Then the Web Page Design course is for you! In this course students will not only learn HTML Scripting Language and Adobe Dreamweaver, but they will learn the animation software, FLASH! Juniors and seniors may earn three college credits from Long Island University. CAREER AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT In this course, students will explore various career options, how to choose a career and be successful in that chosen career. Career and Financial Management will teach personal finance management including banking, investments, credit, insurance, and personal budgeting. This is a mandated course for students pursuing a fiveunit Business Education. KEYBOARDING/INTERNET Using Microsoft Word, students will learn proper keyboarding techniques and the formatting of documents including letters, memos, and term papers. Keyboarding/Internet will also teach teen students about cyber bullying, cyber stalking, social networks, identity theft, and other Internet-related issues. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS Students completing this course will have extensive training in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher where they will learn how to create flyers, newsletters, letterhead, business cards, etc. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may earn three college credits from Long Island University. SPORTS MARKETING Ever wonder why fans and businesses spend billions of dollars each year on sports and entertainment? This one-semester course is designed to teach students about products and services in sports, sports media (including radio, television, and print), stadium design and concession stands. ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING This semester course will introduce students to the world of Entertainment Marketing. Travel, tourism, and amateur sports not associated with educational institutions will be examined. In addition, students will learn how businesses market music and theater, and they will explore careers in entertainment and marketing. PERSONAL FINANCE Juniors and seniors are strongly urged to enroll in the Personal Finance course that was specifically designed for them. This essential one-semester course equips them with the financial knowledge and expertise necessary to survive in the ever-changing economy. Topics of study include: budgeting and saving money, using checking accounts and on-line banking, using credit cards wisely and avoiding debt, buying vs. leasing a car, purchasing insurance, financing college, renting an apartment, owning a home, investing money, and preparing for the future so that a desired lifestyle and financial independence can be achieved.
