General Information about the Chapter
The National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers has proudly and
professionally represented the Institute of Industrial Engineers and its members in Northern
Virginia, Southern Maryland and Washington DC since 1953. We are a non-profit association
that provides leadership for the application, education, training, research, and development of
industrial engineering. There is no IIE student chapter located within the boundaries of the
National Capital Chapter; therefore, our chapter’s activities with and support of student chapters
is limited.
We support the Institute of Industrial Engineers, our members and our profession by raising the
awareness of the contribution of our profession to life, prosperity, and safety of human kind.
Chapter members are members of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and include undergraduate
and graduate students, entry-level engineers, active and retired engineering practitioners and
consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and engineers in education, research, and
government.
Within the Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland and Washington D.C. area, we are recognized
as:
1. A prime supporter to all industrial engineering students.
2. An acknowledged and expert source for productivity improvement.
3. An invaluable source of member benefits that include professional development, career
guidance and assistance, and local industrial engineering communications and
networking.
4. The official local organization that supports the profession of industrial engineering and
promotes an increased awareness of the value of industrial engineers to the economic
strength and quality of life of free people.
5. The official local organization that supports accredited industrial engineering programs
and learning institutions.
3
Mission and Vision Statements
Our Mission Statement
The National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers provides local leadership in
contributing to the continued renewal and development of the industrial engineering profession;
enhancing the capabilities of those who are involved in or manage the application, education,
training, research or development of industrial engineering; and, in representing the industrial
engineering profession including the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
Our Vision Statement
The National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers is the locally recognized
premier membership organization for industrial engineers and their profession. Our chapter
values and serves its individual members and customers, and exceeds their expectations and
requirements. Business and governmental organizations recognized our chapter and its members
as a prime source of information for matters relating to organizational, system and personal
productivity. Our Chapter has a long history of cooperation among the Washington D.C.
Engineering community and is committed to continue this cooperation.
Our Outreach and Social Networking Vision Statement
The National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers promotes the following
goals for the social activities within its chapter: 1) To bring new IE’s into the Chapter
membership and activities; 2) To provide a casual environment for professionals to meet other
IE’s and to exchange contact information for further communication and friendship; 3) And to
learn about IE job opportunities from IE’s working in various companies and work
environments. Additionally, we will strive to begin outreach with other area IIE chapters, both
professional and student.

Financial and Budget Information
The overall management of the Chapter’s financial and budget information will be proactive in
order to adhere to the established budget, as well as to identify opportunities to minimize waste
and increase revenue. This perspective will emanate all Chapter events and activities in order to
ensure the viability of the plan and identify opportunities for improvement. A financial “snap
shot” detailing current Chapter income and expenses against the established budget will be
provided to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis in order to track the progress of the
program and to ensure that the financial projections remain on target.
A strategic sub-committee consisting of the President or Vice-President, the Treasurer and the
C.A.R. Chair will meet before every other BOD Meeting to review the CAR financial criteria for
which we are measured “successful” The President will then report to the BOD (bi-monthly) our
current level of achievement in obtaining our annual C.A.R. success.
2008 Year-End Financial Data
The Chapter had an ending balance of $24776.23on December 31, 2008 for the total of its
checking and savings accounts. The following spreadsheet displays the Chapter’s financial
information in greater detail:
7
This information accompanies this report as file <IIE Budget_December31 2008>.
Financial Forecast for CY09
The projected year-end Chapter balance for the 2009 calendar year will be greater than $23,000.
The projected income during this time period will be at least $1,000, which will be slightly less
than the previous year due to the absence of another large event, such as the 50th anniversary
celebration or any conferences organized and sponsored by the Chapter, as foreseen at this time.
The projected expenses are not anticipated to exceed $2,000 at this time, due to the scheduled
Chapter activities.
Financial Forecast for CY 2010 - 2013
The Chapter expects that the treasury balance will remain constant, or improve slightly in the
future due to additional outreach opportunities and events that will facilitate greater participation
and contributions to the membership. The forecasted revenue and expenses in the future should
also remain steady.

Chapter Calendar of Key Events and Program Schedule for
CY 2009
The National Capital Chapter will work to hold joint meetings, including presentations and plant
tours, with the IIE Baltimore Chapter and continue to reach out to our Richmond Chapter.
Our Chapter will cooperate on joint program efforts with other local professional organizations
having shared interests. This includes National Engineers Week as a member of the District of
Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies (DCCEAS), the Washington, DC
Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS),
Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the IEEE Engineering Management Society (EMS)
and the Washington Academy of Sciences.
We will continue to maintain relations with the most geographically proximate Student IIE
Chapters offering program assistance and welcoming Student Chapter Members with
complimentary reservations at our dinner meetings. An inventory of speakers/topics available
within our Chapter is being developed to support the Student Chapters' programs.
The Chapter will continue to promote Industrial Engineering as we participate in various
collaborative, K-12, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math outreach activities in the
Washington Metro Area. This includes career/guidance days, Science Fairs, and Future Cities
Competition.

Chapter Website & (E)newsletter Objectives
The National Capital Chapter has worked hard to update its website into a modern world class
site. Three Executives and Board Directors now have the access rights and responsibility to
update our content. It will be the responsibility of all Executives and Board Directors to
continually supply the webmaster and content administrators with pertinent and valuable
information for our members, community and profession.
Our plan is to update our content each month. All directors are responsible for reporting on the
current status of their areas of responsibility by the fifth of each month. Then by the 10th of each
month we will electronically mail our (e)newsletter to our members. This email in addition to the
(e)newsletter will also provide a link to our website.
http://www.iienationalcapital.com/asp/content.asp?id=home. It is our goal to keep the
(e)newsletter and website very consistent with each other. We will provide a hardcopy version of
our (e)newsletter for our chapter members who request this because they do not have an email
address.

Chapter Assessment for CY 1/08 - 12/08 Program Year
Assessment of 2008 Chapter Performance
The National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers proudly states that for the
last half of 2006 it met and exceeded all its expectations in providing excellent services to its
members, and the academic, business and government communities in Southern Maryland,
Northern Virginia and Washington DC.
We believe this is evident by the fact that:
1. Chapter 14 continued with a Gold distinction for the IIE Chapter Activity Report
(CAR).
2. Chapter 14 completed an election for its Board of Directors with an election term
from 1-1-09 through 12-31-09.
3. Non Board Chapter Members and potential members attended our Board of
Director’s Meetings
4. We raised over $400 for the Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship Fund.
5. We were the sole sponsor for five technical programs and plant tours.
6. We had nine joint technical programs with WINFORMS.
7. Our joint program included the following societies; ASME, ASQ, HFES, and SME.
8. We supported the DCCEAS MBC4 Connection Expo.
9. A member of our chapter is the current IIE_IAB (Industrial Advisory Board) Chair.
10. A member of our chapter is the current SEMS (Society for Engineering Management
Systems) President.
