Business Leadership Program
The Community Mentor (CM) is a student staff member who serves as a role model and leader for about 30 sophomore
students who are participating in the Professionalism Learning Community (LC) or the Business Leadership Program
(BLP). Community Mentors assist students with the student’s progression through sophomore year, increase students’
connection to faculty and peers, and may assist with connecting students with additional campus resources geared
toward student success.
The Community Mentor and the Faculty Liaison will work together to develop a community essential to student success.
They do this by encouraging student participation in events, arranging experiential and/or service learning activities for
students, and providing opportunities to increase the student’s awareness of career options related to their major.
Community Mentors will work also with students around campus and are responsible for reserving rooms. CM’s must be
willing to meet with their assigned students on the NAU campus during the day, evening, and weekends. Note: no special
parking permits are provided to students serving in this role.
Mentor Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications:






Minimum grade point average of 3.0
Juniors, Seniors, (by fall 2014) or graduate students that have at least one year left at NAU
Major in The W.A. Franke College of Business
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Knowledge of the University and assigned major
Self-motivation
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Planning & Communication: (Approximately 40% of Duties)


Using the Goals and Learning Outcomes established for the community as a guide for your program planning,
complete the following programs on behalf of your community each semester:
 With the guidance of the Faculty Liaison, coordinate a minimum of three academically focused programs
relevant to the group each semester.
 Coordinate a minimum of one gathering per semester for students and faculty/staff within their major or
area of interest.
Support the program goals established by The W. A. Franke College of Business during the academic year.
 Activities may include: guest lectures, service learning projects, community building, and field
trips.

Required Meetings:
 Attend a meeting with your Faculty Liaison every other week.
 Attend a meeting with the college based Leaning Community Coordinator as requested during the
semester.
 Attend periodic meetings/trainings with Learning Community staff.
Community Interaction: (Approximately 50% of Duties)





A primary responsibility is the scheduling of formal and informal interactions with students. A CM is expected to
engage with their students and build positive mentoring relationships.
Meet individually with your assigned students at least one time per semester with the first meeting occurring within
the first 4 weeks of the semester. If the mentor recognizes potential challenges for the student, and/or becomes
aware of a change in the students academic or personal life, they should schedule at least one follow up meeting. They
should also be available to schedule additional meetings at the student’s request.
Help students through peer advising and referrals to appropriate university resources.
At the beginning of each semester, help guide and facilitate the creation and use of peer study groups for common
courses; encourage their continuation based upon the needs of the community.
Maintain email lists and provide information to members through this list.
Paperwork: (Approximately 10% of Duties)






Complete a Weekly Worksheet of the work accomplished
Complete and submit payroll on a bi-weekly basis.
Complete and submit a Program Proposal Form (including goals for the community) for each program planned.
With the Faculty Liaison, maintain an event schedule and track event attendance in the BB Learn shell.
Complete and submit Purchase Order paperwork for budget requests.
Complete other administrative paperwork as assigned.
WAGE: $10.00 hour. Can work up to an average of 10 hours per week. Extracurricular and additional work
commitments are limited to 15 hours maximum. Additionally, a CM will receive $50 in dining dollars during each
semester they are employed in the position. For the 2014-15 academic year, employment dates are Fall 2014, August 25 to
December 12, and Spring 2015 January 12 to May 8.
REQUIRED TRAINING: All Community Mentors are required to complete training session that will cover paperwork
completion, payroll, campus resources, and the use of BB Learn.
Other Requirements



Spring 2014: Complete all payroll paperwork required by Northern Arizona University (not paid)
August 2014: Complete the FERPA, Sexual Harassment, CERT, Kognito, My Student Body, and Information
Security Essentials tutorials within the first 2 weeks of employment (1 hour paid)
December/January 2014: Complete the on-line Peer Mentor Survey if applicable (not paid)

room 222 of the business building or to scott.hoefle@nau.edu. Applications must be received by 5:00 PM on
