MIDTERM PROGRESS
REPORTING
Grades matter.
 Mid-term grades would be offered online through the
Student Information System (SIS)
 Students would know their grades halfway through the
semester so they have time to improve in subjects that
need improvement
 This would complement the Early Warning System for
freshmen, enabling professors and FYE to recognize
students who are struggling in one or more classes
 Drop deadline is 8 weeks after start of semester; this
would give students sufficient time to drop a course
should they feel the need
 We would like to gauge the Faculty Senate’s opinion
on this topic before going any further
ADVISING / MENTORING
Students need guidance.

Advisors can provide guidance and important
information to students in a specific major






Switching into or out of a major/picking up a minor
Internship opportunities
Getting a job after graduation
Help with coursework or knowing where to find help
Students just aren’t utilizing their advisors; program
needs strengthening
Ideas we’re throwing around: implementing a better
feedback system, starting the Promotion & Tenure
Sub-committee much earlier in the year, training
advisors and ensuring that they’re updated when
information changes, possibly mandating that students
see their advisor at least once per year
TAKE A STUDENT TO LUNCH
Why not?
 Excellent opportunity for professors and students to
interact and discuss topics ranging from quantum
theory to classes to grade modifiers over sandwiches
and chips
 Program has existed for awhile now but it seems not
many students/professors are aware of it
 Collaborative effort with the Campus Communications
Committee
 Promoting and publicizing the event in better ways
 Getting feedback on the program from both professors and
students
COMM. REQUIREMENTS &
GRADE MODIFIERS


Follow-up on both the communications requirement and
grade modifiers, although both have already passed and
will be in effect in the near future
Ensure that these changes are being implemented well;
 Observe how many professors choose to use grade modifiers
 See if students’ opinions change on this matter
OTHER THOUGHTS
Because we can’t predict the future.
 Addressing smaller topics that pop up throughout the
school year pertaining to academic affairs
 Testing during GM Week
 Communication between administration, faculty, and students
 Continuing to collaborate with other Student Senate
committees on specific issues
 Looking into other topics mentioned in Max’s Agenda
for Rensselaer, such as altering the final exam
schedule and involving the Rensselaer Alumni
Association more so than has been done in the past,
especially concerning academic issues
