Alex Toft is a graduate from the University of Nottingham where he completed his PhD in 2010. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, his PhD thesis explored the negotiation of identity in the lives of bisexual Christians. His research interests include gender and contemporary identity theory, Christianity, and sociology of sexuality. He is the author of numerous publications with chapters in Contemporary Christianity and LGBT Sexualities (Ashgate, 2009, edited by Stephen Hunt) and Researching Non-Heterosexual Sexualities (Ashgate 2012 edited by Constantinos Phellas) amongst others. He was also a teaching assistant on undergraduate modules such as Sociology of Culture; Belief, Spirituality and Religion; and Introduction to Social Structure. Since 2011 he has worked as a consultant on numerous research projects such as the University of Nottingham Young Adult Carers Research. Recently he has constructed large surveys for the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Sociology and Social Policy. Alex has provided research assistance for HRLC in their capacity as the UK National Focal Point for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. In early 2012, he was the the Lead Social Expert on the FRA social fieldwork project 'Surveying LGBT People and Authorities' and is currently the Lead Research Interviewer for the FRA social fieldwork project on ‘Severe Forms of Labour Exploitation’.
