Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance Job Family and Level: TS2 Contract Status: Permanent, Term Time Only - 38 working weeks, contract length of 44 weeks Hours of Work: Part Time (17.5 hours per week over 5 days am or pm) Location: Sutton Bonington Campus Reporting to: Senior Teaching Technician Purpose of the New Role: To fully support the teaching activities of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science by ensuring that laboratory, live animal and cadaver surgery based practical classes are fully provided for through the provision of materials, advice and operational support Main Responsibilities % time per year 15% 1. Provide technical support to any and all School teaching requirements, supplying established protocols and safety documentation, equipment and materials in liaison with academic and senior technical staff to provide efficiently run, safe practical classes. Provide advice and support during practical classes as necessary 2. Provide technical support to the day to day running of the schools animal facilities, implementing protocols and policies for student small hold rotations and providing advice and support in the area of animal handling as required. Providing occasional husbandry cover where needed, including weekends and Bank Holidays 20% 3. Provide technical support to anatomy and cadaver surgery teaching facilities, using established protocols and safety documentation, equipment and specimens in liaison with academic and senior technical staff to provide materials for efficiently run safe practical classes 20% 4. Provide technical support to the day to day running of the school teaching laboratories and preparation area, ensuring facilities are maintained to the expected standards and all resources are prepared and available as required 20% 5. Dispose of clinical and biohazard waste ensuring contaminated waste is disposed of safely and appropriately 10% 6. Operation of laundry and glass wash facilities to ensure the continuous provision of clean PPE and resources for practical sessions Collection of goods from stores and other areas and moving resources; including animals and anatomical specimens, laboratory equipment and furniture when necessary. 10% 7. 8. Implementing new safety policies in accordance with University and School guidelines. Communicating safety information to the Senior Teaching Technician, auditing and following up to ensure compliance with current policies and statutory legal, health and safety requirements. 2.5% 2.5% Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Qualifications/ Education Essential Desirable 2 A levels in relevant subjects, plus Veterinary nursing qualification significant experience in a relevant area; or extensive relevant experience Skills/Training Experience Statutory/Legal Technical knowledge and understanding of procedures in a veterinary/biological sciences setting Understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures Experience of working in a teaching environment Experience of handling a wide range of animal species significant experience in a veterinary or biosciences related area Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder Development and organisation of teaching materials Provision of advice and support during practical classes Implementing safety procedures Implementing equipment maintenance using guidelines agreed with line manager ii) taken in collaboration with others Development of schedule and requirements of practical classes Organisation of space and resources within the relevant work area iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder Matters outside normal school policy Implementation of new safety policies or major changes to existing policies Page 2 of 3 Additional Information This post is a technical support role and not a teaching post.
