Procedures for Verification
of Academic Credentials
Primary source verification of academic credentials is necessary to assure the quality of faculty at Temple
University. The requirements listed below are applicable to all full-time faculty hires including deans and tenuretrack appointments.
ONLINE VERIFICATION OF ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS
Online verification (www.DegreeVerify.com) is available to candidates who have graduated from a North
American University (primarily for the United States). Such online verification, however, is only considered a first
step in verifying that a candidate proposed for a full-time appointment has graduated. An appointment cannot be
finalized without official transcript(s) of the highest earned degree.
For appointments to the adjunct faculty, online verification of the highest degree earned is considered to satisfy
the requirement for verification of academic credentials. However, in the case where online verification is
unavailable for an adjunct faculty appointment, then the following provisions shall apply.
OBTAINING AN OFFICAL TRANSCRIPT
In most instances, and in accordance with federal law, official transcripts must be requested in writing by the
candidate/faculty member. The attached form may be used to request official transcripts. See Request for
Transcript Office of the Dean Memorandum.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE
Obtaining a copy of professional licensure (such as medicine, dentistry, law) shall not substitute for the official
transcript. Candidates who require professional licensure to practice and/or teach must submit copies of these
credentials along with official transcripts. (For adjunct faculty, online verification of professional licensure
suffices).
ABD STATUS CANDIDATES
For candidates who are ABD, we require an official transcript of the highest earned degree and an official
transcript of the degree/courses currently underway. Some official transcripts may list previous earned degrees.
If this is the case for an ABD candidate, then only the most current transcript may be submitted.
REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES UNABLE TO OBTAIN AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT
A letter from the University Registrar/Former Department/Thesis Advisor (or the like) should be requested. This
letter should be on official letterhead and should include the following information:


Date Degree Awarded

Thesis Title & Name of Thesis Advisor

REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES PRESENTING WITH FOREIGN DEGREES
Candidates must submit official copies of native language records and literal translations prepared by an
appropriate university or government official. Another option is to submit the academic documents to a
credential evaluation organization approved by Temple University, and request that the evaluation be sent
directly to the requesting Dean’s office. Examples of recognized credentialing agencies include:

By my signature, below, I hereby authorize the Registrar/Placement Office of any and all
educational institutions I have attended to release an official copy of my
transcript to Temple University. Temple University will pay the cost of obtaining a transcript
from your institution.
If an official copy of my transcript is unavailable, I hereby authorize the release of a letter, on
official University letterhead, that confirms the (a) name of degree(s) awarded to me, (b)
date(s) these degrees were awarded, (c) thesis title(s) and/or major coursework completed
and/or name(s) of thesis advisor(s).
