An age plateau is defined as contiguous fractions constituting a majority (>50%) of the 39Ar released where the apparent-age variations among fractions may be accounted for with analytical uncertainties. A plateau encompasses as many fractions as possible (except where fraction uncertainties are very large) where ages agree with the plateau within their ± 2-sigma uncertainties. Where this strict definition is not observed and variation among "plateau" fractions is minor but still exceeds analytical uncertainties, an approximate or "near" plateau is defined. In these cases, the indicated "plateau" age is enclosed in quotation marks. For the plateau age, the uncertainty reflects a relative uncertainty of ± 0.25% in J value. An overall systematic uncertainty of ± 1% assigned to all ages to allow for uncertainty in the monitor age. The monitor used was a intralaboratory biotite standard (“AL-1”) that has a 40Ar/39Ar age of 443.5 Ma; an uncertainty of ± 1% is assigned to this age in order to allow for uncertainties in the standards against which AL-1 was calibrated. The age for this monitor was determined by simultaneous cross calibration with several monitors including the Fish Canyon Tuff biotite standard (FCT-3) with an age of 27.84 Ma. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
