Question
Discuss the main issues in political debates about Australia’s immigration policy.
Differing attitudes to multiculturalism have been identified as a key issue in debates on
immigration policy in Australia. Opponents of multiculturalism have argued that, rather than
maintaining their own culture, new immigrants should adapt to Anglo-Australian customs
S
and values, and that preference should be given to immigrants from countries with a British

heritage (Tisdell 1998). In contrast, proponents of a multicultural Australia have highlighted

the
social and economic
importance of being open to new ideas and cultures (International
Social Survey Programme 2003, cited in Markus 2011). While this debate continues, the
finding in one survey that close to 90% of respondents agreed that ‘cultural diversity is a
positive influence in the community’ (Markus 2011, p.93) suggests that most Australians are
in fact in favour of diversity and multiculturalism.

Effective Research and Note Taking
Effective note taking makes it easier to remember where information comes from and to integrate
your sources into your own writing. In the below example, the student has made notes in a way that
makes it easy to see the similar and different ideas different writers have about a topic.
