BACK TO SCHOOL! Teachers, It’s NEP Time Again! What is NEP? NEP is Adding 1st Grade The Nutrition Education Program (NEP) is designed to improve the likelihood that Alabamians will make healthy choices within a limited budget and choose active lifestyles. The program is targeted to food stamp recipients and eligibles. Nutrition education is offered at sites where this audience can be targeted. These sites include local food stamp offices, public housing, food banks and public schools where 50% or more of the students receive free and reduced-priced meals. Beginning this school year, NEP educators can begin working with 1st grade students to teach basic nutrition and good eating habits! In previous years, NEP taught in 2nd – 4th grades. Go for the Gold… Eat Fruits and Vegetables and Be More Active While supplies last…you and your students can receive this colorful, flexible cutting board celebrating fruits and vegetables with Olympic-themed artwork. As the NEP educator for schools in XXXXX and XXXXX Counties, I am very excited. With the addition of 1st grade, I can help more of your students learn about nutrition, and of greater importance, help students put this theory into practice. As you will come to realize, NEP is a wonderful nutrition program, and we are lucky to have it available in our counties. Curricula Students will learn about healthy eating and activity in a learner-centered environment. 1st grade: Wicky Waccoon & Kid’s Club 2nd grade: Little D’s Dragon Adventures 3rd and 4th grades: Arianna’s Nutrition Expedition Reinforcements: Activities and Snacks Each week, I will leave with you at least two activities to do with the students in your class. I won’t need them back. These activities reinforce academic content standards and also help meet Local Wellness Policy goals. I will come to your class and stay as long as you will allow me. Usually 30 minutes to an hour is all I need for a lesson. I try to bring pre-packaged snacks from each food group for the children, so they can see what healthy snacks look like, how easy it is to eat healthfully and try new foods. Nutrition Education Program Calling All Teachers My time is limited. Please let me know if you would like for me to bring this program into your classroom. The first four teachers to reply will get the first semester slots and the last four will get the second semester slots. You can choose your day of the week and time for me to come, but if that day or time is already taken, have a second choice available. Also, get your Principal’s permission for me to come to your class ahead of time. If you have any questions, please contact me any time.
