Adult bed bugs are red brown in color and wingless. Bed bugs can grow to be 1/8th – 3/16th of an inch, not invisible to the bare eye, as some people believe. INVISIBLE ITCHES: Insect and Non-Insect Causes Dr Potter University of Kentucky Because bed bugs feed off the blood of mammals, once they begin to infest your home you will most likely start seeing the bite marks they leave behind. Bed bugs are visible in populated numbers to the bare eye, and so is the evidence they leave behind Treatments Heat Treatments Conventional Treatments Fumigation Treatments Heat Treatment Bed bugs can only stand so much heat. They die at 113°F. Treatment temperature is maintained between 120°- 140°F to ensure they are killed. Length of time varies with infestation levels, type of construction and the amount of stored items. Heat treatments are the number one chemical free option to bed bug control. Planning is simple and easier then other options. The heaters used for this type of treatment are controlled with the use of wireless monitors and computers. Preparation All treatments require some amount of preparation, which is critical to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment. In some cases, preparation is so important that it is written into the treatment contract. In general, heat treatments require a small amount of preparation whereas the conventional treatment requires a great deal. Heat Heat treatment is very effective because it uses the bed bugs’ biological weakness against them - their threshold for heat. Linens, pillows and similar items should be hanging to allow proper heat distribution. Much of is will need to be washed in hot water or dried at a high temperature instead of being treated in the room. Clutter needs to be reduced. Furniture and electronics will remain in the area being treated and will be moved/rotated during the treatment. A heat treatment can normally be done in single treatment lasting 4-8 hours, depending on various factors. treatment regiment are considered environmentally responsible with the use of steam application equipment. The conventional bed bug treatment does require a lot of preparation before treatment, and must be done with a minimum of three intense treatments spanning over a two month period. Conventional The effectiveness of Conventional treatment is dependant on the circumstances. It may not be applicable in all cases because of the bed bugs’ biology and behaviors. Linens, clothes and similar items must be washed in hot water or dried at a high temperature for at least 30 minutes, and kept in a sealed plastic bag until treatment is complete. Clutter needs to be reduced, and closets must be completely empty. Electronics must be powered down and will need to be fumigated. Requires a minimum of three treatments and a follow up spanning over a two month period. Fumigation A fumigation treatment requires the building to be completely and securely covered. Fumigation is the most expensive treatment option, but also the most effective.
