Introduction to Digital Libraries Title Why? OUTLINE FOR THEME 1 Technology and digital libraries Technology is continuing to transform the library world. Contemporary technology is affecting almost every facet of our lives and institutions. Libraries are no exceptions. Digital libraries are evolving along following technology. We are looking here on the effects of technology on libraries through a prism of electronic books (e-books) where many changes and advances can be readily illustrated. Books are also being transformed from print to electronic books – from p- to e-books. Libraries are following this trend – collections and services are being transformed to e-services and e-collections. E-collections are digitized from print or other analog artifacts or borne digital. Libraries started early book digitization, but these efforts were relatively small in scale. Large digitization projects have and are digitizing a massive amount of books. They are creating a digitzing revolution on an industrial scale. You are asking: What are some of the paths taken by digital libraries in deployment of contemporary technology? How do they differ and relate? What? The theme covers: a historical approach to analysis of the relation between libraries and technology examples of transformation in different types of libraries due to technology How?
