MASTER SYLLABUS
SORRELL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
HRM 6689
Human Resource Management Internship
Prerequisites
Unconditional admittance into the MSHRM program, less than one year’s work experience in the
field of human-resource management, no employment or contractual relationship with the firm
or organization sponsoring the internship, and successful completion of at least HRM 6603 and
three other required courses (one of which must be HRM 6622, HRM 6623, or HRM 6632, as
approved by the academic advisor) prior to the start of the term in which the internship begins.
At least one semester prior to registration for the internship, students must submit a written
request to the faculty advisor who will supervise the internship. The request should include the
student’s reasons for wanting to participate in the internship program and the goals the student
hopes to achieve. The internship request must be approved prior to registration for credit. [Note:
While faculty will assist in establishing the internship, it is the responsibility of the student to
secure a sponsoring organization.]
Description
Independent study of a practical problem or project, pertinent to human-resource management,
taken in a field setting.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence in one or more functional areas of human-resource management
in a real-world setting.
2. Communicate the results of the experience effectively in written and oral form.
Purpose
To broaden knowledge and understanding of concepts, processes, and practices relevant to the
profession of human-resource management by applying them to a field setting. Internships
typically require the fulfillment of 80 on-the-job work hours and up to an additional 40 hours of
outside work as necessary to complete a human-resource management project for the sponsoring
organization. A report is typically presented to the instructor at the end of the term. Project
content and the nature and format of the report are typically outlined in detail in a Memorandum
of Understanding between the cooperating University entity and the appropriate human-resource
manager in the sponsoring organization. MSHRM elective.
