Pavers – The pavers on top of the Montag leading into Baxter (from the south) and Bishop continue to come lose and can cause a trip hazard. Jan (in response to last month’s minutes) says that bamboo is an invasive species that can be difficult to manage. Would a large black mat with small holes to allow the water to still seep through. We can still make a recommendation as a committee – Melissa and Rich will work on a recommendation for corrections to consider. 2 Railings – There are buildings on campus that do no not have railings by the steps, and should that be something looked into? Jan (in response to last month’s minutes) mentioned that there are building code requirements for handrails, and that a lot of our buildings are older and would not be required to have them. Does not requiring them mean they are still safe? Good question we are not sure the answer to. Is it possible to install the railings? We can look at the buildings that need it the most and make recommendations that go from there. 3. Room Capacity – Several of the classrooms around campus seem to potentially have outdated room capacity signs. Rich spoke with the Fire Marshall around this recently. The rooms with 2-doors can actually hold up to 49 people. The Fire Marshall will be back on campus and Rich will touch base with him. It was noted that previous meeting minutes only mentioned Eaton, but Walton and Smullin are also issues. 4. Soccer Net – The net on the north side of the soccer field remains uninstalled. The process for the installation is still being worked on, no new updates at this time. New Business: 1. Pool Deck at Sparks – slip hazard It is growing as a hazard – it has smoothed down and there are places where the water pools. There are some sort term fixes – Chuck can mix sand with some paint in some areas over Spring Break. But there would be a search for long term fixes. Perhaps painting the entire area, with textured paint. Matting it – but not sure if they would be able to just be laid over the top. Tearing out the entire thing and starting new – but that is the least likely to happen. Rob and Leslie Shevlin will be investigating some of those options – Rob have something for the April meeting. The pool is not currently part of any of the work being done at Sparks re-model. 2. Unsecured windows – Eaton Not sure if it was a safety committee issue but it can breed other things to make it a safety committee issue. Emails have been sent to many Faculty. There is a concerns it isn’t the faculty, it was the students who come in at night. There are 2 rooms that don’t lock There are students who have particular access based on the building and their major. Campus safety doesn’t the lock the rooms. Can we get rooms on the list of rooms to be locked by Campus Safety? There is a certain level responsibility that falls on everyone if we see the windows open to close them. Are there signs? There are lots in Olin and they seem to work Custodial does a good job of trying to catch them all. Can our ASWU rep help? 3. OSHA Training Everyone is encouraged to go to these trainings. There is one April 18th. Rich has a list of when they are. 4. Lighting concerns on the west side of campus Between the Atkinson Annex, Executive Building, Law School, and Winter Street, there is a concern of that area being very dark. This is on the list of summer projects for this summer. Rich would still like to send a recommendation from the Safety Committee. 5. MOH Elevator cleaning Should the Hatfied Library Elevator be cleaned during the day without there being a sign notifying patrons? It is something we can talk with Betsy about. Accident /Injury Log: Two since our last meeting Injury of a lower back of an employee. Doesn’t appear to be anything that the University could have done. Bystander (who happened to be a employee) inhaled chemicals that had been diluted and rinsed while using the bathroom. Protocol was followed for cleaning and disposing of the chemical. Part of this was that the employee has a pre-existing condition. In the future, custodial and facilities staff will be more aware of if there are others around diluting and disposing of used chemicals. There was a first Aid incident with a student at the Theatre – small cut. Adjourned 10:30a Next meetings- 3rd Thursday, 10:00 a.m. Harrison Conference Room: April 18, 2013 May 16, 2013
