1.5.8 Professional Development Improvement Plan January, 2008 Professional Development Improvement Plan Student Teacher: CANDIDATE 1 The professional semester is an integral and vital part of the total Pittsburg State University Teacher Education program that seeks to “Prepare Competent, Committed, Caring teachers.” The experience allows student teachers to apply theoretical principles of teaching, learning, and apply their acquired knowledge base. When this experience does not show adequate performance regarding the College of Education Professional Knowledge Base, a Professional Development Improvement Plan is implemented. Part I During the Spring Semester2008 the student teacher will refresh her skills by auditing CURIN 366 Primary Reading, and CURIN 368 Classroom Management. She will participate in, and complete all assignments satisfactorily before being returned to the professional semester in the fall of 2008. She will also participate in school situations where she can continue to develop her skills. (e.g.: substituting, teacher’s aide) Part II The Professional Development Improvement Plan is based in part on the Professional Knowledge Base or the 68 performance behaviors. Listed below are the categories and indicator/skills the student teacher needs to review and develop a higher level of skill before returning the professional semester experience. 1 1.5.8 Professional Development Improvement Plan Professional Characteristics 1. Knows and complies with school policies and shares in the general responsibilities and duties associated with teaching (e.g., attendance, discipline, hall duty). (7) 2. Communicates fluently using appropriate and grammatically correct oral and written language. (11) Relationships With Students 3. Utilizes learning activities and personal role modeling to develop enthusiastic learning attitudes, respect for learning, and positive values in students. (21) Instructional Planning 4. Develops clear short and long-term instruction plans (e.g. lesson plans, units, and/or modules) which include objectives, materials, activities, and evaluation techniques based on the curriculum objectives. (23) 5. Has an up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter and attempts to incorporate diverse and practical illustrations, examples and applications in lesson material and activities. (24) 6. Selects materials and activities consistent with the objectives of the lesson and the students’ prerequisite skills, attention span, and learning styles. (25) Instruction 7. Conducts class with poise, confidence, and enthusiasm. (29) 8. Insures that lesson materials and information are professionally displayed accessible to all students. Incorporates individualized strategies for students with special needs (e.g., English as a second language, learning disabled, behavioral disordered). (37) 11. Conducts lessons at an appropriate pace so all students have the opportunity to learn the intended objectives. (43) 12. Provides focus on important points and checks for understanding. (44) 13. Accomplishes smooth and orderly transitions between parts of the lesson. (45) 14. Effectively achieves closure to each lesson and/or class period. (48) 15. Provides instruction that maximizes time on appropriate tasks by keeping all students involved in learning. (49) 16. Encourages and facilitates opportunities for students to think creatively and critically, to solve problems, and to develop the skills needed to live, learn, and work in a global society. (51) Classroom Management 17. Believes in and communicates a well-defined classroom management system. (53) 18. Establishes, teaches, and reinforces classroom expectations rules, routines, and procedures fairly and with an awareness of cultural attitudes and mores. (55) 19. Monitors and keeps track of all student behavior and activities in the classroom at all times. (56) 20. Displays consistency in dealing with behavior in the least disruptive manner, utilizing appropriate positive and negative consequences. (57) 3 1.5.8 Professional Development Improvement Plan 21. Handles multiple task, intrusions, and distractions while maintaining momentum and smoothness in the lesson. (58) 22. Understands how to handle unexpected classroom incidents and emergencies appropriately. (59) 23. Analyzes classroom problems and resourcefully seeks strategies to help develop a learning environment which encourages self-management, social interaction, high timeon-task, and active engagement. (60) Part I of this plan is to be evaluated twice during the Spring Semester 2008, once at midterm and at the end of the semester. The student teacher is participating in, and completing all assignments satisfactorily.
