3.5b Elementary Internship Guidelines
INTERNSHIP SEMESTER Information
Who can apply?
•
Any Teacher Education major who has achieved the following criteria:
 Admitted to Teacher Education
 Attained the following GPA’s: In-Major: 3.0 and Cumulative 2.8
 Have completed all coursework except Restricted Courses (can take an additional 3 credit hour class, but not a
practicum or internship)
What are the requirements during the Internship?
•

Requirements for Interns include:
 Available to begin the school year when area schools start – participate in teacher in-service activities prior to
the first day of school.
 A commitment of at least 8 clock hours, but not more than 10 clock hours each week to work with a licensed
teacher in a K-6 classroom.
 Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a mentor teacher.
 A self-starter – willing to be a team-player.
Classroom Activities include:

Weeks 1-9:
 Initially observe the mentor teacher as he/she establishes routines, procedures, instructional planning, and
interacts with students.
 Assume responsibilities of working with individual students, conducting opening exercises, providing
small group instruction, reading to the class, grading papers, putting up bulletin boards, etc.
Weeks 10-16:
 With the mentor teacher, choose one subject to teach.
 In cooperation with the mentor teacher, plan and design lessons to teach the last few weeks of the semester.
 Communicate with Academic Supervisor (from Curriculum & Instruction) throughout the teaching
experience.
 Complete assignments for methods courses.
When does the Internship start?

August 2010 (actual date depends on when the assigned school starts).
On-campus courses start according to the PSU class schedule.
Why be an Intern?

Experience the school year from the first day to the end of the year.
Gain valuable hands-on experience in a K-6 classroom.
Learn to apply theoretical principles of teaching and learning to classroom teaching.
Start developing personal principles of teaching and learning.
Observe strategies the mentor teacher utilizes to develop effective classroom management procedures at the
beginning of the school year.
How do you apply for the Internship Program?

Review Degree Audit for eligibility.
Make an appointment with your Advisor for Summer/Fall enrollment.
Discuss the program with your advisor and other departmental faculty.
Complete the application, including the signature of your advisor signifying his/her approval.
Submit the application to Office of Teacher Education, 110 Hughes Hall by Friday, April 16, 2010.
