SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The annual report was distributed electronically. Tammy asked that any corrections or changes be submitted by September 11. At that time, the annual report on sustainability goals will be finalized for 2012.

Updates during the meeting:

Education and Research:

Recyclemania is a ten week competition, not six week.

Janice Greene mentioned that WILD and Learning Tree are not yet under our authority.

Operations:

Bob will follow-up on the vending machine sensors.

We have a contract with a new waste company. This company will measure waste and decrease pickups over breaks.

Submission of a press release for “Show Me Yard”

Continue education and data. Example: a report on how much turning computers off saves.

Planning, Administration and Engagement:

Add multicultural scholarships.

HR is working on employee evaluation to measure satisfaction.

Partnerships with JRBP and Watershed Committee of the Ozarks

Planning Sustainable Energy Conference

Inter-campus collaboration on sustainability with Drury.

Brochure update:

Tammy said that the brochure is at press. When printed, they will be distributed.

Key Performance Indicators:

Suggestion to group all water consumption together and all electric consumption together.

Additional information should be added about water conservation due to the drought.

Energy Conference Subcommittee Update:

Events scheduled:

3-4 Person Panel Discussion: 11/14/12 at 3-4:30pm (PSU Union Club: Room 400)

Barbara will speak with Dave Fraley (utility industry); Bill Moore (renewable); and find a representative for green building for the panel.

Paige will find a student to serve on the panel discussion (conservation).

The Parliamentary Room (PSU 313) was unavailable; so the Union Club has been reserved for both the panel discussion and keynote speakers).

Keynote: 11/14/12 at 6pm-7:30pm (PSU Union Club: Room 400)

Mike will contact Catherine Hart (Joplin, MO) and Andrew Whitehead

(Greensburg, KS) to serve as the keynote speakers on 11/14/12 at 6pm.

Mike emailed Catherine and Andrew on 7/26/11, and we received confirmation that they will serve as the keynote speakers on 11/14/12.

Expense: dinner and mileage.

The Parliamentary Room (PSU 313) was unavailable; so the Union Club has been reserved for both the panel discussion and keynote speakers ).

Rooms are reserved and housing has been offered to the speakers.

The Environmental movie on November 14 will be “Too Hot Not To Handle”. 8-9:30pm in PSU

Theater. It is a film about global warming.

Matt Morris and Tammy Jahnke were assigned to meet with Don Hendricks to work on publicity for this event.

Celebrating successes

Sharing around the room

Paige Oxendine reported that recently appointed sustainability commissioner Kara Andres will oversee ideas for outdoor recycling and event recycling, especially at JQH.

Jeff Brown reported that 12 new recycle stations have been added from the District O Grant.

Jennifer Cox reported that the Residence Life Green Committee is working on green initiatives and fresh ideas in their area. They are planning for the U. S. Green Building Council’s Green

Apple Day of Service on Saturday, September, 29. There will be a video competition and an

“adopt a street” event. Residential Life will explore grants for funding a project to do their own composting on campus.

Tony Hein: will be attending carbon footprint training with Chartwells. They will be working on waste minimization and have a waste table in Blair/Shannon for two hours on September 27.

The hunger banquet with a combined food raiser is scheduled for September 17.

Tiffany Frey reported that the city is planning workshops on water quality, rainwater harvest, pet waste campaigns and UDA cigarette butt campaigns, especially in the downtown area.

Janice Greene reported that the field station will conduct a teacher workshop to help teachers teach about sustainability and natural resources. Missouri State University continues to be interested in serving as coordinator for Project WILD and Learning Tree.

Bill Cheek reminded everyone of the 15 th

Ozark Celebration Festival.

Earle Doman reported that Peggy Jones is coordinating a way to track sustainability funds and audit procedures. The tobacco ambassadors have been successful. They will target high usage areas such as Glass Hall. He will check with grounds crew to see if they notice reductions.

There will be more smoke-free trainings.

Ken McClure reported on the Partnership for Sustainability. The group is working to expand beyond health care and education to include industry partners. MSU will continue to work with

City Utilities and water conservation during the drought. There will be critical days with peak level energy usage.

Tammy Jahnke reminded everyone of the Ozarks New Energy (ONE) fundraiser to be held in the concrete home of Dan Chiles on Sept 8, 2012. November 8-9 is the annual water conference with Tri-State Water at the Double Tree Inn.

David Vaughan reported that the new recycling bins are keeping student workers busy.

Bob Eckels reported that the new energy manager Maria “Pilar” Karlen has started work and will plan ways to better educate the campus on sustainability. The campus cooperation with water and electrical conservation is greatly appreciated. $300,000 for energy projects will be dedicated to connecting Forsythe to chilled water, pressurizing independent valves and a campus wide electrical study of supply grids.
