CLA Student Success Programs and Services
The Student Success Hub is located in Matthews Hall.

Academic Support, academicsupport@willamette.edu/503-370-6505, located in the Learning
Commons in Ford Hall, offers students assistance in understanding WU’s academic
expectations and how to meet them. Individual consultations are available for improvement of
study strategies, time management, long-term academic planning, etc. Individual tutoring and
group study sessions are arranged, free to the student. Contact: Mat Barreiro
Career Services, career-services@willamette.edu/503-370-6413, located in Matthews Hall,
helps students with career decisions, linking them to resources and helping them to launch job
searches. They meet with students 1-on-1 to help address issues such as re-defining academic
major, negotiating change, and locating sources of support. They also discuss career issues
and assist in developing a job search plan. Contact: Jerry Houser
Accessible Education Services (formerly Disability Services), 503-370-6737, located in
Matthews Hall, facilitates accommodations for qualifying students with permanent or temporary
disabilities. They assist students in obtaining appropriate documentation of a disability,
developing plans for academic and other campus accommodations, skill development in selfadvocacy, and accessing campus resources. Contact: Lorie Fontaine
Health Professions Advising, mbourque@willamette.edu, located in Matthews Hall, assists
students in planning, preparing, and applying for post-graduate programs in the health
professions. Contact: Monique Bourque
Native American Programs, 503-370-6960, located in Matthews Hall, supports Native
American students as they transition into Willamette University. The University’s program with
the Chemawa Indian School is directed and managed by this office. Contact: Liz Bahe
Student Academic Grants and Awards mbourque@willamette.edu, located in Matthews Hall,
assists students in planning, preparing, and applying for scholarships and fellowships to fund
post-graduate projects and graduate programs. This process includes identifying appropriate
programs, gaining appropriate experience, and all stages of the application process. The office
also administers three internal grant programs that fund students’ summer research and

Student Support Advising, 503-370-6737, located in Matthews Hall, provides regular
meetings with and monitoring of students who are on academic probation. Students meet often
with the Student Support Advisor who guides their academic efforts. Contact: Judith Poutasse
The Writing Center, 503-370-6959, located in the Learning Commons in Ford Hall, offers oneon-one consultations with writers on any piece of writing and at all phases of composition. They
emphasize a conversational model, where the writer sets the agenda, and also provide
guidance on using online and print resources. For students whose first language is not English,
consulting is available with Dr. Amanda Cornwall. Students can schedule appointments online
by joining the Writing Center’s WISE site. Contact: Gretchen Moon
CLA Additional Sources of Support
Counseling Services and the Bishop Wellness Center, 503-370-6471, located in Baxter
Hall, offers psychological counseling to assist individual students dealing with personal crises,
anxiety, stress, social and academic transitions, family relations, alcohol and other drug
problems, and other issues of concern. All counseling services are confidential, and students
are afforded five free individual sessions every academic year. Walk-in, same day crisis, and
appointments in response to interpersonal/sexual violence that occurred while a Willamette
student are always free.
The Learning Commons, located on the 1st floor of Ford Hall, is available to CLA students 24/7
for both individual and collaborative study. Stations with glass panels, white boards, and media
give students tools to engage in their studies. Three programs are located in the Learning
Commons: Academic Support, the Language Learning Center, and the Writing Center.
The Mark O. Hatfield Library provides subject-specialist librarians who meet individually with
students to introduce them to efficient and productive approaches to research. Also available
from the library’s homepage are links to resources and research guides. The library collection
includes materials which support course work and the writing of research papers: books, music,
DVD’s, academic journals, a popular reading section, and many online materials available 24/7.
Any materials the library does not own can be borrowed from another academic library at no
charge. The library also houses a video recording room and a 24/7 study hall.
The QUAD Center, located in Smullin 244, provides support related to quantitative activities
and assignments associated with courses ranging from introductory classes to senior thesis
projects. The QUAD Center focuses both on the kinds of basic mathematics central to academic
and civic literacy and on research design and statistical issues arising in a broad range of
disciplines across the liberal arts. QUAD stands for Quantitative Understanding, Analysis, and

The World Languages Studio,llc@willamette.edu/503-375-5492, located in the Learning
Commons in Ford Hall, is a place where students can come for language learning resources,
technology help, international events or just a quiet study environment. The Studio is an area of
