VP Administrator of fin aid. Full report based on feedback will be presented
in Feb at a retreat meeting. Willamette has been trying to clarify the
distinctive features of the College of Liberal Arts using an integrated
marketing committee. Researching ways of what do we need prospective
students to know. Retained an outside firm: Lawlor Group, trying to better
understand WU’s culture and identity. The final results will be
recommendations about how to share new messages. Questions?
5.2
VP Helive: job market v. grad school? Does that depend on society?
5.3
MR: the data is specific to WU
5.4
Pres. Lazaro: would a bulking of career services be a result, or is it all about
marketing?
5.5
MR: I’m hoping it’s about both. But there might appear that there are other
we need to work on that matter more to the specific audience. It’s about
which are the ones that would produce the best results.
5.6
Reichert: I’m curious about the lack of recognition about Willamette. How
are you going to approach making this school better known?
5.7
MR: The action will be about sending out the unique characteristics of WU.
The long term product will be recognition. “Moving up in U.S. News and
World report is not the driving force of this.”
5.8
Merkel: how will the increase of TIUA students affect class sizes?
5.9
MR: it won’t.
5.10
Reihm: economy hindering the possible changes?
5.11
MR: I think the current economy makes this even more important. Stop doing
what not working and allocate money to other areas.
5.12
VP Smith: are you finding gaps within connecting the community.
5.13
MR: Yes. I’m grateful to you for being involved and interested. Students are
the primary motivation.

WEB Report
6.1
Lauren Saxton: Magic show was amazing. Preliminary project almost done,
will share with Colin soon. Midnight Breakfast is this Sunday. Starts at 10.
See you next semester.

Officer Reports
7.1
Pres. Lazaro: Not a lot to report. Thanks Doug for shuttles. In process of
correcting crosswords. Its boring, the worst thing!
7.2
VP Helvie: Caitlin and Janice co-chairing committee. Have lovely holiday
cards for administrators on campus. Also, selling extras on Sharecat.
7.3
VP Waite: CAB met this week. The Collegian Advisory Board! Collegian has
new editor in chief choice for next school year, there was an ad in last
Collegian. Asked Collegian to have more than one week of advertising, not
fair. Next semester they will advertise for three weeks again. The salary is
paid with Student Body Fee, so it should be publicized to the student body.
7.4
Morrison: when will they announce the new person?
7.5
VP Waite: when CAB approves the person.
7.6
VP Waite: next semester, the collegiate readership program has money not
being used. So its accumulated. What to do with that fee, $10 per student.
There is 25000 dollars sitting there, we might make it into an endowment for
media. New TV’s, increase in papers being purchased, etc… Look out for
that. Something will be drafted for next semester. WEB Advisory Committee:
everything going well.
7.7
VP Smith: Meeting with scheduling tomorrow. Any last minute thoughts?
7.8
Rasmussen: sent out a reminder for scheduling.
7.9
Rathe: can you have them unlock rooms that we reserve.
7.10
VP Smith: yes, I will see what can be done. Next semester start working on
the convocation and senior speaker committee.
8.0
New Business
8.1
VP Waite: financial report: Broke down expenditures for last semester. All
reimbursements due this past Monday. Approx. total expenses (not counting
sports clubs and carry over money) was $40,000 of allocated funds that were
supposed to be spent. $4300 on travel, $2000 on cultural food, etc… ask
Colin. $12,500 unspent money this semester, this is a problem. Its money that
is going to be recycled. I’m asking for clubs to fill out events logs, get them
to self evaluate and help finance board. We need to increase productivity of
student clubs, a lot of events are internally used within the club rather than
the WU community.
8.2
Taylor: do you know how this compares to previous years?
8.3
VP Waite: there is generally left over money, but because there haven’t been
recycling periods, the money just gets disused.
8.4
VP Smith: is there a way to open funding to non-student organization, or to
individuals if they prove it will effect WU.
8.5
VP Waite: yes, but students know that only registered clubs can apply for
money. If we open this to everyone it might be viewed as negative. It
decreased potential accountability. There are lots of factors; also the
availability of accounts is very low. It would be a problem for accounting.
8.6
Lauren: WEB gets a lot of request from students and we have money set
aside for that.
8.7
Tomlinson: I think that Larkin’s idea is complicated, but it would be good
especially with the disassemble of HHR. Students will need a new place to
get money for events.
8.8
VP Helvie: dorms will still have money from residence fees.
8.9
VP Waite: HHR provides funding for halls, not for events. There is a lack of
events that appeal to a lot of students on campus. Also a lack of desire for
clubs to put on those kinds of events.
8.10
Merkel: Bad publicity of clubs… could we get clubs to have to advertise
events in the Collegian.
8.11
VP Waite: that’s an idea we hope to use for the ASWU website. A student
events calendar. Also there might be a lack of knowing within clubs that this
is a possibility.
8.12
Reichert: have you discussed changing the protocol of funding for food and
security?
8.13
VP Waite: food would not change events unless it is a banquet. People should
not just show up for the food. Security: that may be a possibility but I don’t
see that impacting many events.
8.14
Morrison: Seems like there is a sentiment that it’s hard to get money from
ASWU. I don’t know if that true, but maybe we should work on streamlining
it more.
8.15
VP Waite: Tell your friends who are in clubs about bringing bigger speakers
and throwing bigger events. Basically they have an info session, get emails
and I am available to answer questions.
8.16
Merkel: can we as senators request money for pet projects?
8.17
VP Helvie: you have to turn in a budget request, but that comes from ASWU
Office Budget.
