Essay: Two of the following essay questions will appear on the exam, and you have to
answer one of those. Essays should include the most important points about the topic,
and lots of specific details to support your points.
1. How did the climate change around 2000 bce affect the riverine cultures? Using
specific examples from Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus River and China, explain
how these societies were organized before 2000 bce, what happened with the
climate change, and how the societies were different afterwards.
2. What were the principles of Confucianism? What effect did this philosophy have
China’s society and government?
3. Does Alexander of Macedonia deserve to be called “the Great”? Why or why
not? Include a description of Hellenism.
4. What were the values of classical Greek society? How were they related to the
successes and failures of classical Greece?
