ENG 120 – PERSUASIVE ESSAY Due Dates: Thesis Statement/Outline Rough Draft Final Draft 10/27 11/1 11/3 Length: 3-4 pages, MLA format Essay Prompt: Choose one of the authors we have read in class (see list below) and decide whether you agree or disagree with the author’s point of view. In this essay, you will need to explain the author’s perspective and show why you agree or disagree. Use compelling and persuasive examples from the reading, your own experience, and/or personal observation to support your opinion on the topic. Choose one of the following: “Watch out for Traffic Jams” by Michael Booth “The Pseudo-Event” by Daniel J. Boorstin “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau “America: The Multinational Society” by Ishmael Reed “Just Walk On By” by Brent Staples Thesis Statement / Outline – Due 10/27 The thesis statement is one sentence that is focused and debatable. It should state the topic that is addressed in the reading and your overall position (opinion) on that topic. The outline needs to have three main points (I, II, III) that prove your thesis. Each main point needs at least two (i, ii) supporting details. Both the thesis statement and outline need to be typed. Save a copy of the thesis statement and outline to reference while you work on your essay. If you do not turn in the thesis statement and outline, your final grade on the paper will be docked 5%. Rough Draft / Peer Review – Due 11/1 The complete typed draft must have a working thesis, substantial developmental paragraphs, and a basic introduction and conclusion. If you do not have a complete typed draft of your essay for the peer review, your final grade on the paper will be docked 5%. Print two copies for the peer review in class. Turn in both rough drafts with your final draft. Final Draft – Due 11/3 Submit your final draft to turnitin.com before the final due date. Failure to submit will result in a 5% deduction.
