The AA Degree in Spanish!
Program Description
The purpose of this program is for students to learn Spanish
as a first or second language so they can communicate
successfully with the Spanish-speaking world, and
understand and appreciate the Hispanic cultures.

EMPHASIS FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS
1. Required course for Heritage Speakers (16 units)
Spanish 280 (5 units) *Usually offered in Fall.
Spanish 281 (5 units) *Usually offered in Spring.
Spanish 282 (3 units) *Usually offered in Fall.
History 142 (3 units) *Not offered every year.
Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:
1. Communicate orally and in writing in Spanish in real life
situations.
2. Read and comprehend Spanish at levels commensurate
with those of students seeking a degree in Spanish.
3. Understand the Hispanic cultures, through the study of
their history, literature, arts, contributions of prominent
figures, and foreign travel.
Please Note: All students planning to obtain an A.A. Degree
in Spanish must meet with a full-time instructor in the
department to establish the appropriate emphasis. In
addition to the General Education Requirements as stated in
the College Catalogue, the student must complete a total of
23-25 units distributed among Sections 1 and 2 as stated
below.

our Spanish Faculty possesses at least a Master’s Degree in
Spanish.

Spain, and other Spanish speaking countries. The
study abroad program is highly recommended to
any student who is considering to major or minor

The Spanish faculty was recently certified to teach
Occupational Spanish. Occupational Spanish is a fledgling
but important and highly relevant field of Spanish instruction.
It is non-grammar based, and its content is highly focused
and job-specific. The Spanish department can offer jobspecific courses such as Spanish for Respiratory Therapy,
Hospitality, Business, Law Enforcement, Educators, and
