Characteristics of Ideal Faculty Member – Laura’s list from last
meeting not yet available.
Legal Opinions Regarding Hiring (Laura) – “Adverse Impact” occurs
if the imbalance is shown to be intentional. “Diversity” involves “who
is invited to the table,” while “inclusivity” emphasizes everyone eating
together. Prop. 209 says can’t give extra points for diversity. Other
ways to increase diversity of pools and hiring outcomes include
working on desirables to emphasize cultural competence in range of
areas. Start with faculty at curricular level – where is the field going,
global orientations…? Timeline – Spring would be the time to develop
these, possibly as Flex Day activity.
Other Related Discussion Items
3.3.1
Hiring committees need to be on board with college goals –
BOT and administration need to emphasize the larger goal of
where the college is heading in the areas above, set tone for
division chairs and other committee members. Discussed
division chair structure, problems with elected faculty
members serving vs. deans hired for the position. Currently,
chairs have responsibilities, but less accountability than
other administrators.
3.3.2
Need better training for hiring committees to recognize
cultural/learning style competence in instructors. Exit
interview of students who drop would help refine

understanding of behaviors or attitudes that affect
different student populations differently.
Three areas to focus on: 1) Hiring process and authentic
assessment; 2) Building diverse pools; 3)Training once people
are hired (PDC)
