This master class publicises UCD’s IVRLA digital repository project
which promotes innovative access to extensive historical and cultural
archive material and creates awareness of the potential of digital
repositories along with presenting outputs from research projects in a
digital and innovative format.
The master class allows scholars at all levels to understand key issues
concerning digital repositories, metadata, and how to access and use
the extensive resources available within the IVRLA.
Participants should bring a laptop in order to complete online
exercises and participate in the class blog.

The guest speaker at this seminar will be Damini Kumar, an
international expert in design, creative thinking and innovation and
the Director of Design and Creativity at NUI Maynooth.
She is the inventor of the world's first non-drip spout, a worldwide
patented award winning innovation which disproved years of scientific
research into the ubiquitous problem of the dripping teapot and can be
applied to any pouring spout. In 2009 the European Commission
appointed her a European Ambassador for Creativity and Innovation
to foster the principles and value of innovation and creativity at all
levels of European society.

The UCD IVRLA digital repository project promotes innovative access

Event Overview:
The economic crisis has raised old questions in new ways: How
effectively are we governing ourselves? Are our state institutions fit
for purpose? Where do we need to concentrate our efforts at reform?
The Mapping the Irish State project, at UCD’s Geary Institute, funded
by the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences
(IRCHSS), has developed a database, the Irish State Administration
Database, through which we can track the evolution of the Irish state
over time, from 1922 to the present day.
This half-day conference asks provocative questions about how we
exercise public power in Ireland and indicates where some of the key
problems are. It highlights the work of University College Dublin
researchers committed to translating academic research into findings
that are not only interesting in their own right, but of practical
relevance to Irish public policy.
Speakers at this conference include Professor Christopher Hood,
Gladstone Professor of Government and Fellow of All Souls’ College,
Oxford, an internationally renowned scholar, who will provide a
keynote address on the dynamics of public sector reform. The
interactive panel sessions involve both academic and senior public
sector discussants.

The seminar’s speakers, who will include Professor Gerardine Meaney,
UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies, will consider the issue of place
in literature, particularly in the digital age. The panel will then discuss
how images, video-clips, spoken commentaries, documents and
recommendations were used to develop a multi-media landscape for
the Joyce's Dublin research project and consider how this can be
developed for teaching and research built on the IVRLA's literary
collections. The seminar will conclude with a round-table discussion of
issues and experiences in integrating digital resources with literary
research.
Tea and coffee will be served before the event (3.30 pm onwards).

This event is aimed at small businesses seeking a green image to the
customers. It will showcase the concept of life cycle thinking and its
application in business. Life cycle thinking means to understand the
environmental performance throughout the whole life cycle of products
and services, taking into account not only the production but also the
consumption and finally the waste management, including all the
relevant transportations.
During this event, ISO 14000 series would be introduced (in which life
cycle assessment is standardized), commercial benefits of applying life
cycle thinking into production (eco-design), management (life cycle
management), marketing (carbon footprinting, eco-labelling) etc
would be presented and attendances would be encouraged to discuss
about applications in their own field.

University Upstarts Weekend Challenge

a
weekend-long
workshop
focused
on
building
commercially driven, innovative web and/or mobile applications from
concept to working prototype. It will also include a showcase and
awards ceremony.

This event is taking place over 3-days as follows, Friday, 12 November
2010 (6:00 pm – 10:00 pm), Saturday, 13 November 2010 (9:00 am
– 9:00 pm) and Sunday, 14 November 2010 (9:00 am – 9:00 pm).

UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics, UCD Computer
Science and Informatics Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4.
Event Overview:
The format of the weekend is as follows - at the start any of the
participants can propose an idea with the aim of trying to engage
other participants to work with them on it. After a few hours, teams
form around a subset of the proposed concepts, and the teams spend
the rest of the weekend realising the concept both in terms of
producing a working software prototype and a basic commercial case.
The event is an experimental approach to innovation which brings
together a diverse mix of skills to produce commercially focused web
and mobile applications over the course of a weekend. The format has
been used in many places throughout the world, is generally great
fun, an excellent networking opportunity and in some cases the
genesis of a potentially lucrative business proposition.
At the end of the weekend, all the teams will present to an
adjudication panel which selects an overall winner.
This event is being run by UCD School of Computer Science and
Informatics in conjunction with NovaUCD, UCD Research and UCD
Quinn School of Business.

This is a day-long workshop, organised by UCD’s James Joyce
Research Centre, and is open to students and those with an interest in
Joyce's Finnegans Wake.
Joyce's Finnegans Wake, published in 1939, is widely seen as one of
the most prodigiously original texts of the twentieth century. It
lastingly changed the nature of fiction and shattered the boundaries of
the English language.
A dauntingly brilliant text, it baffles and
captivates its readers in equal measure.
Finnegans Wake is most effectively explored in a reading group and
best unfolds its energies through a mutually supportive communal
reading.
This workshop will concentrate on “The Ondt and the Gracehoper”
fable, Finnegans Wake, Book III, Chapter I, 414.14-419.10, and
uncover its originality and complexity.
The
workshop
will
be
moderated
by
Professor
Vicki
Mahaffey
(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Professor Derek
Attridge (University of York) and by Professor Anne Fogarty (UCD), Dr

Event Overview:
University College Dublin’s Innovation Research Unit along with UCD
colleagues in Arts and Humanities and colleagues in the Netherlands
will hold a 3-day conference to highlight the relevance of the cultural
dimension in innovation. The purpose of the conference is to analyse
the socio-cultural forces which shape the economic, technological and
political innovation agenda.
The key note speaker is Nico Stehr, The Karl Mannheim Professor of
Cultural Studies, Zeppelin University, Germany. Other speakers
include Professor John Caughie, University of Glasgow and Dr Andrea
Scharnhorst VKS, Maastricht University, The Netherlands.
This conference will promote and establish an interface between
academia, the Irish public and the diverse inhabitants of Dublin for the
public discussion of an important current social issue, the issue of
innovation. Cities play a unique role in the cultural impulses and
environments that trigger novelty.
The conference aims to focus on the cultural sources of economic
value creation by addressing specifically Dublin’s urban, community
and artistic culture and their contribution to the country's innovation
agenda. The conference also intends on investigating how the arts are
used by organisations as sources and models for innovating their
routines and cultural and creative industries, which can be observed

Event Overview:
Fifteen new high-tech and knowledge-intensive business ventures are
taking part in this year’s NovaUCD Campus Company Development
Programme (CCDP). The Programme assists UCD academic and
research entrepreneurs in bringing their innovative ideas from
intellectual
concepts to fully developed
and
sound
commercial
businesses. The CCDP is designed to assist academic entrepreneurs by
providing them with the skills necessary to transform their ideas into
commercially feasible new ventures. This Programme culminates in an
Awards evening during which each of the participating new ventures
delivers a short ‘elevator pitch’.
Three short-listed ventures, selected by an independent evaluation
panel, will present their business plans in more detail to an audience
comprising members of Ireland’s research, state agencies, venture
capital, industry and business communities.
The overall winner,
selected by the evaluation panel, will be presented with the NovaUCD
2010 CCDP Award and a cheque for €5,000. The two other shortlisted
ventures will receive runner-up awards and prizes of €3,000 and
€2,000 respectively.

An examination of public statuary in Dublin exploring the past in terms
of the present.
The Art of Innovation Lecture Series will consist of 3 separate lectures
held during the course of Innovation Dublin 2010. The lectures will
link discussions of buildings and works of art in Dublin to earlier
chapters in the history of innovation.
Lecture 2: From Berlin to Chicago to Dublin

Event Overview:
The seminar’s speakers, including Professor Mary E. Daly, Principal,
UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies, will consider the emergence
and development of the Irish state and how this has been reviewed
and reinterpreted, particularly in the digital age. Specific IVRLA
historical projects and collections will be discussed and the seminar
will conclude with a round-table discussion of issues and experiences
in integrating digital resources with historical research.
Tea and coffee will be served before the event (3.30 pm onwards).
Staff will be available to demonstrate the IVRLA resource before and
after the seminar (3.30 pm-4 pm & 6 pm-6.30 pm).

Event Overview:
While the insights of physics and art have profound effects on human
experience, the languages they employ and contexts they inhabit
often obscure their connection to everyday life as well as to each
other.
Artist Emer O’Boyle has been working in collaboration with staff and
students in the UCD School of Physics. She has been exploring ideas
and concepts of physics through a series of portraits, juxtaposing the
highly specialised, and often abstract world of physics, with the
mundane, revealing the human side of research along with the hidden
structures, supports and connections that allow both subjects to
develop and progress.
Emer will speak about her work with the School and her talk will be
followed by a chance to view the portraits which she has created.

University and Tyndall National Institute, Cork is co-ordinating a
Thesis in Three competition.
In this competition, PhD students from around Ireland who have been
funded under SFI’s CSET Programme will come together to showcase
their thesis research, in a range of science, engineering and
technological areas, using only three slides, and using only one minute
per slide. In this competition PhD students will outline, for a general
public audience, which is taking place in research institutions and
centres around Ireland.
A judging panel will select an overall winner who will be presented
with an award.

This modern office building is a specifically Irish descendant of
American high-rises designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies
van der Rohe. Innovations in both engineering and art helped shape
what is nonetheless a site specific collection of office towers.
The Art of Innovation Lecture Series will consist of 3 separate lectures
held during the course of Innovation Dublin 2010. The lectures will
link discussions of buildings and works of art in Dublin to earlier
chapters in the history of innovation.

innovation. The keynote speaker will be Professor Michael Shanks,
Professor of Classical Archaeology, Stanford University, California and
Director, Stanford Humanities Lab.
Professor Michael Shanks is an acclaimed thinker and practitioner in
the fields of innovation, design and the humanities. In his innovation
lecture, he will examine design history and thinking and explore how
archaeology offers exceptional insight into how we understand
creativity, innovation, change and our dependency on goods.
Professor Shanks is a visiting professor in digital humanities at UCD
Humanities Institute of Ireland and the UCD John Hume Institute for
Global Irish Studies.

many of the glass windows and glass partitions which are a prominent feature of the new
buildings on the campus. The event is designed to be both thought provoking and
dynamic.
