Guidelines and Study Suggestions for
The Comprehensive Examination
Language, Literacy and Special Populations
1. Comprehensive Examinations are scheduled Fall and Spring (there are NO oral comps
during the summer) to certify that students have completed all requirements for the Master of
Education degree.
2. Students should not schedule to take the comprehensive examination until they are in their
final semester of coursework. The semester for the comprehensive examination should
coincide with the semester for graduation. Students should make a serious effort to prepare
for the examination as failing could delay graduation and/or certification.
3. The semester before the anticipated graduation the student should apply to graduate (through
Registrar’s office) and to take the comprehensive examination (through LLSP office).
Example: Students who plan to complete coursework to graduate in the Spring Semester
should apply to graduate and to take comprehensive examination in the Fall Semester.
4. Course outlines and objectives, bibliographies and class notes and assignments should be
used in preparing for the examination. The types of questions asked will vary by content area
and change every semester. This is left to the discretion of individual Professor(s).
Responses to questions should reflect current research and literature, including extensive
references and citations.
5. Questions concerning the examination in particular area should be directed to the appropriate
program chair.
6. The written portion of the comprehensive examination will be mailed to students such that
students have 2 weeks to prepare their written responses. Written responses will be due back
to the departmental office by the specified date.
7. Professors will evaluate the written responses as High Pass, Pass, or Rail. Students will meet
with a panel of professors for a minimum of one hour for oral comprehensive exams. They
will discuss written responses, make a presentation, or respond in writing to additional items.
The specific nature of the review will be left to the discretion of the professors teaching in the
program area.
8. Students will be informed at the time of their review as to the results of their comprehensive
examination. Official results and/or results from additional written items will be mailed
within 3 weeks.
9. Students should attempt the comprehensive examination only once each semester. A reexamination shall be permitted on the exam when the candidate fails. A third examination
may be permitted upon approval of the appropriate academic dean, department chair or
program coordinator. Students must re-apply to take comprehensive examinations.
