UNIVERSITY SAFETY OFFICE SUBJECT New Employee and Student Training Requirements I. PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance to supervisors on what safety topic shall be reviewed with a new employee. II. SCOPE This policy covers all full-time and part time faculty, staff and student employees and volunteers III. RESPONSIBILITIES A. THE UNIVERSITY SAFETY OFFICE DEPARTMENT The University Safety Coordinator has the responsibility to develop, update and maintain this policy. B. SUPERVISORS Supervisors are responsible for ensuring the employees they oversee are adequately trained to deal with the hazards that are present in their work place and what they should do in the event of an emergency. C. EMPLOYEES Employees are responsible for own personal safety including: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. REQUIREMENTS 1. Have the employee review the Texas Hazard Communication Act (THCA): http://www.shsu.edu/safety/documents/SHSU_Haz_Com.pdf Upon completion of the review the employee shall be able to describe these employee rights under the THCA: Policy: New Employee and Student Training Requirement Issue Date 4/21/08 Revision: 0 a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) Purpose and applicability of the THCA Location, use and interpretation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Use and interpretation of chemical container labels Location, health effects, and safe handling of hazardous chemicals present in their work area. Proper use of appropriate protective equipment. First aid treatment with respect to hazardous chemicals General safety instructions on handling, cleanup, and disposal of hazardous chemicals Develop a list of all department employees (to include student employees) that need to be trained. 2. Develop appropriate level of training for different job classifications based on: a) Type of work to be performed, i.e. clerical, shop, driver, material handing, lab, etc. b) Use of hazardous materials c) Use of tools or equipment 3. Training shall include: a) What hazard are present in the workplace b) Location of MSDS’ c) Proper use of personal protective equipment d) What to do in the event of an emergency (see number 7 & 8 below) 4. Designate a person responsible for conducting training. 5. Describe format of the programs to be used (videos, lecture, review of policies and procedures) 6. Describe procedures for providing periodic refresher training. a) A new hazard introduced into the work environment, i.e. new chemical or new piece of equipment b) An employee is assigned to a new job, i.e. transfer from office setting to warehouse c) A change in work practices, i.e. a hazard is identified that was not previously recognized. d) A mishap occurs, i.e. accident of close call 7.
