Application Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. All materials are submitted electronically through the ApplyYourself application system. Admission decisions are communicated to applicants using this system. A decision for admission notice will be emailed to you once your application is carefully reviewed by the department’s admission committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by Graduate School officials. Admission A four-year bachelor’s degree in an English or other humanities program (or 30 semester credits of coursework in English or a related field, with at least 20 credits at the upper division) is required with a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Two writing samples demonstrating your best academic work. Three letters of recommendation. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for the General Examination. GRE Subject Examination scores are not required, but will be taken into account if they are provided. Students whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from one of the following English proficiency examinations: Examination Minimum score TOEFL 600 (paper based) or 248 (computer based) MELAB 80 IELTS 7.0 Please note that while we admit graduate students for fall or spring semester, we only consider applications for teaching assistantships and other forms of financial aid to those who apply for fall admission before the April 15 deadline. Application Process Deadlines February 15 is the application deadline for applicants who wish to be considered for teaching assistantships or other forms of financial aid. Applications received by February 15 will be given priority consideration for admission and financial support. Applications received after February 15 will be considered on a space and funds available basis. June 15 is the final application deadline, though we strongly urge applicants to submit their application well before this deadline. October 1 is the application deadline for applicants who wish to be considered for spring admission. Materials All application materials should be submitted directly to the ApplyYourself admissions system. We cannot review your application until all of the required materials listed below are submitted successfully. International students should also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts, there is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review. Writing Samples Electronically via ApplyYourself or in hard copy Please submit two writing samples that demonstrate your best work. At least one of these should reflect your best academic, analytical writing; the other may highlight your creative writing. You may upload them into the Other Information portion on the Graduate Program Supplementary Information section of the ApplyYourself online application. Letters of Recommendation Electronically via ApplyYourself or in hard copy Acceptable recommendations will come from current or former professors who can assess your potential for graduate work. Other recommenders, such as employers, are also acceptable. Paper copies are accepted, and should be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of English, 410 Humanities Building, University of Minnesota Duluth, 1201 Ordean Court, Duluth, MN 55812.
