Bachelor of Commerce Day Course
General Regulations
i.
The degree is composed of a number of courses, which are given at three levels. Level 1 courses are offered at the
commencement of the degree programme. These are followed by Level 2 courses. Level 3 courses are taken in the
final stages of the degree programme.
ii.
Courses are taken individually. The pass mark in each course is 40% and no compensation is allowed. The award
of a pass mark in a course is subject to the additional regulations concerning course work and project based
courses.
iii.
A student may not repeat any examination that the student has already passed. A student is deemed to have
completed his/her degree requirements as soon as all required courses have been passed.
iv.
Where a mark is given for course work in a subject, a pass mark will not be awarded for the course unless at least
35% is attained in the written examination in that course. The course work mark shall only be counted for the first
examination offering of any course. The second examination offering mark shall therefore be based entirely on the
written second offering examination paper.
v.
A student cannot be registered for any Level 3 course nor attempt any Level 3 examination while the student has
one or more Level 1 examination outstanding.
vi.
Degree Honours Classification
For degree honours classification, a weight of 1/3 will be given to Level 2 examinations, and 2/3 to Level 3
examinations. For a repeated Level 2 subject, the mark used for degree honours classification will be the result of
the successfully repeated examination. For a repeated Level 3 course, the mark used for degree honours
classification will be the result of the successfully repeated course.
The honours classifications are as follows:
First Class Honours
70% of aggregate weighted grades
Second Class Honours Grade I
60% of aggregate weighted grades
Second Class Honours Grade II
50% of aggregate weighted grades
When a student fails to obtain credit for an elective, then the student can opt to either repeat the failed elective or
choose another elective. In the event that a student opts to choose another elective, he/she must re-register for that
elective, re-attend and pay the appropriate fee.
vii.
Within Level 3 each mode may offer up to one applied course in which a supervised project assignment will form
the major component of the course. Assessment of a project-based course will be based on the submitted project
work together with an end of semester written examination. Up to 70% of the available marks may be allocated to
the project component of the course. To pass a project-based course, a student must achieve a minimum mark of
40% for each of the written examination and project components. Where a student achieves a mark of less than
40% in either component, the student must repeat the failed component. For a repeated Level 3 project-based
course, the mark used for degree honours classification will be the result of the successfully repeated examination.
viii.
With reference to the degree weighting of 1/3 for Level 2 and 2/3 for Level 3, students who have received
exemptions from Level 2 or Level 3 courses will have the quality of their degree determined, on a proportionate
basis, by the grades they have received from courses which have been taken at University College Dublin. Thus,
grades from courses used for exemption purposes will not contribute to the quality of the degree.
ix.
21
A maximum of 40% of the total marks available in each course may be allotted to course work.

1.
The Degree in the Bachelor of Commerce is a primary degree in the Faculty of Commerce.
2.
Approved courses of study must be attended for at least eight semesters after matriculation. Students who have not
successfully satisfied all exam requirements of the entire degree programme within twelve semesters may not
remain in the Faculty of Commerce.
3.
i.
31
The pass mark in each course is 40% and no compensation is allowed.
ii.
iii.
iv.
Students who do not obtain the credits associated with a course by the second examination offering may
be required to re-register for that course, re-attend, complete any assigned course work, pass the
examination and pay the associated tuition fee. Students should note that courses may change from year
to year, may not be offered in certain years and may be dropped entirely from the programme. This will
require the substitution of a course(s) by additional course(s) and will entail re-registration, re-attendance
and the payment of appropriate fees.
Credits will be given for each set of course units passed. Each level of the degree programme contains 75
credits.
Where a mark is given for course work a pass mark will not be awarded for the course unless at least 35%
is attained in the written examination in that course. The course work shall only be counted for the first
examination offering of any course. The second offering examination mark shall, therefore, be based
entirely on the second offering examination paper.
4.
The degree is composed of a number of courses, which are given at four levels. Level 1 courses are offered at the
commencement of the degree programme. These are followed by Level 2 courses. Level 3 and Level 4 courses are
taken in the final stages of the degree programme. Courses in all levels are semesterised and examinations are held
at the end of each course. Examinations take place at the end of the semester in which the subject is taught and one
repeat examination is offered. The repeat examinations for semester 1 and semester 2 examinations are held in
September. In the event that a course is changed or modified, then no additional repeat examinations for the
original course will be offered. A student may not repeat any examination that the student has already passed. A
student is deemed to have completed his/her degree requirements as soon as all required courses have been passed.
5.
Progress from Level 1 to Level 2:
6.
i.
Students who obtain a total of 75 credits on the combined results of the Semester I and Semester II
examinations of the Level 1 courses are eligible for unrestricted entry into Level 2 (second year) courses.
ii.
Students who obtain 52 or more credits, but less than 75 credits, may progress to Level 2 and attend
courses at that level. However any Level 1 examinations not passed must be repeated.
iii.
Students who obtain less than 52 credits in the combined results at the end of Semester I and Semester II
examinations of the first year may not remain in the Faculty of Commerce programme. The Faculty may
waive this rule in exceptional circumstances.
Progress from Level 2 to Level 3 and Level 3 to Level 4:
i.
Students wishing to progress to Level 3 must have completed all the exam requirements of Level 1.
Students who obtain 52 or more credits, but less than 75 credits, may progress to Level 3 and attend all
Level 3 courses. However any Level 2 examinations not passed must be repeated.
ii.
Students wishing to progress to Level 4 must have completed all the exam requirements of Level 2.
Students who obtain 52 or more credits, but less than 75 credits, may progress to Level 4 and attend all
Level 4 courses. However any Level 3 examinations not passed must be repeated.
7.
Honours may be awarded in each course and in the degree as a whole.
8.
For degree honours classification, a weight of 50% will be given to Level 3 examinations, and 50% to Level 4

CODPF0005 DIPLOMA IN THE FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS
General Regulations
1.
The diploma is composed of eleven credit-based courses, which are taken individually. The pass mark in each course is
40% and no compensation is allowed.
2.
A student may not repeat any examination that the student has already passed. A student is deemed to have completed
his/her diploma requirements as soon as all required courses have been passed.
3.
Honours will not be awarded in the Diploma.
4.
The Diploma is composed of a number of courses, which are given over two years (First Year – Level 1.1 and Second
Year – Level 1.2). In the event that a course is changed or modified, then no additional repeat examinations for that
course will be offered.
48
5.
On successful completion of the Diploma, the mature student will be awarded the Diploma in the Foundations of
Business. This Diploma will allow the mature student unrestricted access into the Bachelor of Commerce Degree
Programme at B. Comm Level 2. A student who passes at least nine of the eleven courses in the Diploma within two
years of entry may apply to the Faculty of Commerce for permission to register for the Bachelor of Commerce.
6.
Students who do not pass a course by the second examination offering may be required to re-register for that course,
re-attend and pay the associated fee. Students should note that courses may change from year to year, may not be
offered in certain years, and may be dropped entirely from the programme. This will require the substitution of a
course(s) by additional course(s) and will entail re-registration, re-attendance and the payment of appropriate fees.
7.
Course Work
(i) Where a mark is given for course work a pass mark will not be awarded for the course unless at least 35% is
attained in the written examination in that course.
(ii) The course work mark shall only be counted for the first examination offering of any course. The second offering
examination mark shall, therefore, be based entirely on the written second offering examination paper.
8.
To pass Business Skills (BMGT 1009), a student must achieve a minimum of 40% for each component of the course.
Where a student achieves a mark of less than 40% in either component, the student must repeat the failed component.

Conditions:
The MBA degree may be taken part-time (normal duration: two years) or full-time (normal duration: one year). The overall
MBA degree result shall be the aggregate of marks out of a total 2000 marks, excluding exempted subjects (if any). Unless
specifically stated, all subject courses shall be examination-based. Certain courses may be prescribed, by the MBA Policy
Committee as project-based; the marks for these will entirely be by continuous assessment and projects.
In the case of examination-based courses, a maximum of 40% of the total marks may be allotted for course work. In the
case of subjects where marks are awarded for course work, a minimum of 35% must be obtained in the written examination
in order to pass the subject.
The normal date for the submission of the Report on the Applied Research Project will be 31 st August of the year in which
all subjects are completed. Extension to this deadline may only be granted with the permission of the Programme Director.

permission to re-register for that course, re-attend and pay the associated fee. Students should note that courses may
change from year to year, may not be offered in certain years and may be dropped entirely from the programme. This will
require the substitution of a course(s) by additional course(s) and will entail re-registration, re-attendance and the
payment of appropriate fees.
Compensation is not allowed:
Where a candidate fails a subject, the subject may be repeated. Repeat examinations, where required, are held in the
Autumn. In the case of a subject which is repeated successfully, the mark recorded shall be the higher of either 40% or the

Conditions
 The MBA IFSC is a part-time degree programme completed over two years.
 The overall MBA degree result shall be the aggregate of marks for all subject courses together with the Applied

 Faculty may grant to students who do not obtain the credits associated with the course by the second examination
special permission to re-register for that course, re-attend and pay the associated fee. Students should note that courses
may change from year to year, may not be offered in certain years and may be dropped entirely from the programme.
This will require the substitution of a course(s) by additional course(s) and will entail re-registration, re-attendance and
the payment of appropriate fees.
 In special cases and only those with the permission of the Programme Director, candidates may be permitted to defer
the sitting of an examination in one or more subjects to a later time.
 The normal date for the submission of the Report on the Applied Research Project will be the 31 st August of the year in
which all subjects are completed. Extensions to this deadline may only be granted with the permission of the
Programme Director.
 Examination Offering: There are two examinations associated with each course. The first examination, termed the First
Offering, held immediately after the course and the second examination, termed the Second Offering, held at a later
date, normally in the Autumn.
 Not all electives are offered in any year.
 Candidates who do not obtain the credits associated with a course by the second examination offering may be required
to re-register for that course, re-attend and pay the associated fee. Candidates should note that courses may change for
year to year, may not be offered in certain years, and may be dropped entirely from the programme. This will require
the substitution of a course(s) by additional course(s) and will entail re-registration, re-attendance and the payment of
the appropriate fee.
Compensation is not allowed:
 Where a candidate fails a subject, the subject may be repeated. Repeat examinations, where required, are held in

Each student is examined in ten subjects, four core and six optional. Five subjects are taken in each semester, starting
in September (Autumn Semester) and in January (Spring Semester). Autumn
semester examinations are held in December and Spring semester examinations are held in May.
Each subject is marked out of 100: at the discretion of the instructor, up to 40 marks out of 100 can be allotted to
course work. In the case of subjects where marks are awarded for course work, a minimum of 35% must be obtained in
the written examination in order to pass the subject.
Pass
The pass standard is 40% in each subject.
Honours
Honours will be awarded on the candidate’s aggregate marks. The standard for First Class Honours is 70%, and for Second
Class Honours (Grade 1) is 60%, and for Second Class Honours (Grade II) is 50%.
Compensation
Compensation is not allowed.
Exemptions
Once having passed a subject, a candidate is exempt from further examination in that subject. Students who registered for
the MSc (Technology Management) degree, but who are not in a position to complete it, may petition to be conferred with
the Higher Diploma in Technology Management, provided they have passed all the necessary subjects.
Repeat Examinations
Students who fail or defer an examination in a specified subject may take the examination at the next sitting. Candidates
will be permitted to defer only in special cases and with the permission of the Programme Director. Credit for continuous
assessment will carry through only to the next available sitting of the failed or deferred examination.
81
Students should note that courses may change from year to year, may not be offered in certain years and may be dropped
entirely from the programme. Where a failed or deferred subject is not offered, a different course may be substituted in
order to gain the requisite credits. Students must re-register, re-attend and pay appropriate fees for the alternative subject.
In the case of a subject that is repeated successfully, the mark recorded shall be higher of either (a) 40% or (b) the average
of the original mark and the repeat mark for the subject. Candidates who repeat are eligible for honours on the basis of their
overall grade for the subject.
Time Limit
Candidates must complete the Higher Diploma within three years of first registering.
