PASS STANDARD
50% - Refers to all Years
In order to pass the First Medical Examination a candidate must obtain an aggregate mark of not less than 500/1000 in all
subjects of the examination, no subject to fall below 45%.
In order to pass the System I Examination, a candidate must obtain an aggregate mark of not less than 50% of the total marks
in all subjects of the First Year and the Systems I examinations (750/1500), no subject to fall below 45%. Personal and
Population Health I and 2 are considered as a single subject for the purposes of the 45% rule.
Normally, the examinations of the First and Second Medical Years must be passed in four attempts.
The First Medical examination must be passed before commencing the courses of the Second Medical Year. However, a
candidate who fails in only one subject of the First Year, may proceed into the Second Medical Year and take a further
examination in that subject in the winter. If then unsuccessful the candidate must withdraw from the Second Medical Year
and repeat the subject of the First Year course.
The Systems One Examination must be passed before entering the Third Medical Year.
A candidate who obtains 50% in any subject will be exempt from further examination in that subject.
If a candidate is examined in any subject more than once, the best result in this subject will be used to calculate the aggregate
result for the Systems One examination.

Note 1:
Residency Year Combined Medicine and Surgery Long Case
In this evaluation candidates will assess a patient for 45 minutes during which time they will be expected to perform a
complete history and physical examination (including fundoscopy) and formulate a differential diagnosis. The student will
then be joined by a pair of examiners (one physician, one surgeon) for another 20-25 minutes who will examine the student
on aspects of the history, physical examination and differential diagnosis, and on other aspects of pathophysiology,
investigations and treatment.
Note 2:
In the ultimate Part 2 Final examinations in Medicine and Surgery, candidates who have a fail standard may be required to
take a Long Case examination with an external examiner or may be required to submit to an oral examination. Candidates
with specified Honours or near-Honours marks may be invited or mandated to participate in an “honours” oral examination.

Final Year MCQs
Two papers of twenty questions each – each question having five stems – negative marking.
Final Year Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
Students will rotate through nine stations, six of which will be clinical stations, in one hour (five minutes per station). Each
clinical station will be supervised by an examiner. OSCE stations will assess one of the following:



Final Year Long Case
Students failing their OSCE will be required to sit a Final Year Long Case with an extern examiner. The examination will
have the same format as the Residence Year Long Case except that both examiners will be physicians and the examination
will also include a discussion of the treatment of medical emergencies.
Final Year Oral Examination
Candidates will have an oral examination in three situations, namely if their combined theory and clinical mark is:
<50% (<80/160 marks) - candidates will be required to attend a pass/fail oral. Candidates deemed to have passed the exam
will be awarded a total final medical examination mark of 50%(100/200 marks).
153
>57% and <60% (92-95/160 marks) - candidates will be invited to attend an honours oral. Candidates deemed to have
attained honours standard will be awarded a total of 60% (120/200). Candidates not attaining honours standard will receive a
computed mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components, as below.
>67%(>108/160 marks) – candidates will be invited to attend a first class honours oral: candidates deemed to have attained
first class honours standard may receive a maximum of 40 marks. Candidates not attaining first class honours standard will
receive a computed mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components as below.
Candidates who after their OSCE have achieved a total score of >50% and <57% (>80/160 and <92/160 marks) and >60%
and <67%(>96/160 and <108/160 marks) will not be invited to attend honours orals as they have passed or have achieved
low/med- range second class honours, respectively. These candidates will receive a computed viva mark on the basis of their
performance in the theory and clinical components.
Examiners in orals may not award marks less than the computed mark to students invited to attend, i.e. candidates may not be
disadvantaged by attending the oral examination.
Pass Standard
50%
In subjects including both written and practical examinations, a candidate may be rejected on the grounds of extreme
weakness in one or other part of the examination, in which case a pass mark for the subject will not be granted.
In the MB, BCh, BAO Degree Examination the subjects Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics or
Psychiatry may be passed separately. Failure in the clinical portion of the examination in any of these subjects will entail
failure in the whole subject.
Compensation
Compensation between subjects shall not be permitted.
Exemptions
A candidate who has obtained a pass mark in a subject shall be exempted from further examination in that subject.
In the MB, BCh, BAO Degree examination an exemption will normally be held for a period of two years. A candidate who
achieves a sufficient standard in the written, clinical and MCQ parts of the examination in either Medicine or Surgery or
Obstetrics and Gynaecology may be exempted from taking the oral examination in that subject. In supplemental
examinations the MCQ paper and dissertation may be waived, the marks allocated to this being transferred to the oral
examination.

*The continuous assessment mark is calculated from the 10% of the mark awarded in the Third Year Medicine & Surgery
Exam and 20% of the total mark awarded for the Fourth Year OSCE.
**A candidate who achieves a sufficient standard in the written part of the examination (and the Written and Clinical
Examination in the case of Psychiatry), may be exempted, at the discretion of the examiners, from taking an oral examination
(a mark of 52% will be considered for this purpose). An honours mark may be awarded only to students who attend the oral
examination.
Pass Standard
Pass standard 50%. No candidate is allowed to pass in any subject unless he obtains a minimum of 45% in the written part of
the examination. The clinical section of all final subjects must be passed.
In repeat Examinations the MCQ paper may be waived, the marks allocated to this being transferred to the written
examination.
Ruling regarding the application of the award of a mark of ‘35’ in the Final Clinical Examinations
In the case of a student who achieves the following clinical marks:
Long Case
35
Short Case
50 and above
or
Long Case
50 and above
Short Case
35
He/she will receive a Third Clinical Examination by another Pair of Examiners in the clinical in which the ‘35’ mark was
granted, i.e. either the Long Case or Short Case(s). An external Examiner must be part of the re-examining team and neither
of the examining pair will have previously have examined the student.
If the student achieves a mark of 50% or higher, in the third clinical, he/she will then receive an additional Oral examination
by one of the Clinical Professors and an External Examiner. If the student fails the Oral examination, he/she will be deemed
to have Failed the examination overall.

FINAL PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION
Honours standard
Honours (First Class and Second Class) may be awarded separately in each of the subjects of the Final Professional
Examination, i.e. (a) Medicine & Surgery, (b) Obstetrics & Gynaecology, (c) Psychiatry and (d) Paediatrics.
First Class Honours
First Class Honours may be awarded in any subject to candidates who obtain 70% or over in that subject.
Second Class Honours
Second Class Honours may be awarded in any subject to candidates who obtain 60% or over in that subject.
Honours Degree
For the award of an Honours Degree, honours must be obtained in the aggregate marks of the subjects Medicine/Surgery,
Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Paediatrics.
A First Class Honours Degree may be awarded to candidates who obtain 70% or over, no subject to fall below 60% for First
Class Honours.
A Second Class Honours Degree may be awarded to candidates who obtain between 60 and 69%. No subjects to fall below
55% for Second Class Honours.
Note: Candidates who fail one or more of the degree subjects are not eligible for the award of an honours degree.
If the total marks in the subjects Medicine/Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Paediatrics so computed do not
warrant the award of First or Second Class Honours Degrees, the candidate will be awarded a Pass Degree, notwithstanding
the fact that Honours are awarded in a separate subject or subjects.
