Personal and Population Health I and 2 are considered as a single subject for the purposes of the 45% rule. Normally, the examinations of the First and Second Medical Years must be passed in four attempts. The First Medical examination must be passed before commencing the courses of the Second Medical Year. However, a candidate who fails in only one subject of the First Year, may proceed into the Second Medical Year and take a further examination in that subject in the winter. If then unsuccessful the candidate must withdraw from the Second Medical Year and repeat the subject of the First Year course. The Systems One Examination must be passed before entering the Third Medical Year. A candidate who obtains 50% in any subject will be exempt from further examination in that subject. Final Year Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Students will rotate through nine stations, six of which will be clinical stations, in one hour (five minutes per station). Each clinical station will be supervised by an examiner. OSCE stations will assess one of the following: Observed history* Communication skills* Demonstration of physical signs* Interpretation of biochemical, haematological, microbiological or immunological test results Interpretation of radiological findings Medical devices Observed prescription writing Final Year Long Case Students failing their OSCE will be required to sit a Final Year Long Case with an extern examiner. The examination will have the same format as the Residence Year Long Case except that both examiners will be physicians and the examination will also include a discussion of the treatment of medical emergencies. Final Year Oral Examination Candidates will have an oral examination in three situations, namely if their combined theory and clinical mark is: <50% (<80/160 marks) - candidates will be required to attend a pass/fail oral. Candidates deemed to have passed the exam will be awarded a total final medical examination mark of 50%(100/200 marks). 153 >57% and <60% (92-95/160 marks) - candidates will be invited to attend an honours oral. Candidates deemed to have attained honours standard will be awarded a total of 60% (120/200). Candidates not attaining honours standard will receive a computed mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components, as below. >67%(>108/160 marks) – candidates will be invited to attend a first class honours oral: candidates deemed to have attained first class honours standard may receive a maximum of 40 marks. Candidates not attaining first class honours standard will receive a computed mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components as below. Candidates who after their OSCE have achieved a total score of >50% and <57% (>80/160 and <92/160 marks) and >60% and <67%(>96/160 and <108/160 marks) will not be invited to attend honours orals as they have passed or have achieved low/med- range second class honours, respectively. These candidates will receive a computed viva mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components. Examiners in orals may not award marks less than the computed mark to students invited to attend, i.e. candidates may not be disadvantaged by attending the oral examination. Pass Standard 50% In subjects including both written and practical examinations, a candidate may be rejected on the grounds of extreme weakness in one or other part of the examination, in which case a pass mark for the subject will not be granted. In the MB, BCh, BAO Degree Examination the subjects Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics or Psychiatry may be passed separately. Failure in the clinical portion of the examination in any of these subjects will entail failure in the whole subject. Compensation Compensation between subjects shall not be permitted. Exemptions A candidate who has obtained a pass mark in a subject shall be exempted from further examination in that subject. In the MB, BCh, BAO Degree examination an exemption will normally be held for a period of two years. A candidate who achieves a sufficient standard in the written, clinical and MCQ parts of the examination in either Medicine or Surgery or Obstetrics and Gynaecology may be exempted from taking the oral examination in that subject.
