Exemptions
Candidates who obtain 40% in each of three or more subjects at any given sitting may be exempted in those subjects. Candidates may carry any exemption obtained in an academic year into the following academic year.
Two Year Rule
A candidate in First or Second BCL must have passed, or have been awarded compensation in, each examination by the Autumn sitting of the academic year following the year he/she first attended lectures in the prescribed subjects.
Progress
Candidates must successfully complete First BCL before progressing to Second BCL and Second BCL before progressing to Final BCL.
Eligibility for Honours
To be eligible for Honours, a candidate shall normally be required to have passed the First or Second BCL or the
BCL Degree Examination at the first sitting of each in Summer and/or Autumn.
Compensation
Compensation will be awarded in one subject provided that the candidate: a.
does not fall below 35% in that subject; b.
has passed four other subjects; c.
has excess marks in one other subject, whether taken in the Summer or in the Autumn in that year, equivalent to double the deficiency.
Course Work
In the First, Second and BCL Degree Examination, a maximum of 30% of the total marks available in any subject may be allotted to course work except that, where the teaching of a subject is equally shared, each examiner may allot a maximum of 20%.
First Class: At least 340 marks with a preponderance of marks of 70% and no mark less than 50%.
Second Class, Grade I: At least 300 marks with either: a.
a preponderance of marks of 62% or above and no mark below 40%, or b.
at least one mark of 70% or above, one mark of 62% or above, one mark of 60% or above and no mark below 55%.
Second Class, Grade II: At least 265 marks with either: a.
a preponderance of marks of 55% or above and not more than one mark below 40%, or b.
at least one mark of 62% or above, one mark of 55% or above, one mark of 53% or above and no mark below 50%.
Third Class: At least 240 marks with either: a.
a preponderance of marks of 50% or above, or b.
at least one mark of 55% or above, one mark of 50% or above, one mark of 48% or above and no mark below 40%.
"Preponderance" shall mean a majority of a given grade or above.
The Examinations Board retains discretion to derogate from the normal application of Marks and Standards where it is just and reasonable to do so.

Pass Standard
40% in each subject. A satisfactory performance in the examinations taken during the year abroad (Third Year) will be a condition precedent to entry to the Final Year of the BCL (Law with French Law) course.

Course work, which shall not exceed 40% of the available marks in any one subject, may be taken into account.
Students may submit a minor dissertation, previously agreed with the Faculty, the marks for which shall not exceed 100. This dissertation can be submitted to replace one of the above courses.
Pass standard: 50%
The examinations must be passed as a whole, except in the case of part-time students who must complete the examinations over two academic years. Part-time students who fail one subject only at the first sitting may proceed into the second year, carrying that failed subject. Compensation as between full subjects or half subjects is not permitted.
Distinction will be awarded if three subjects are assessed at 65% or above and no one subject falls below 60%.
Candidates who fail one or more subjects or half subjects may request the permission of the Faculty to re-sit all subjects again at the next examination sitting only. If permission is granted the candidate is not eligible for the award of an LLM degree with distinction. In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may permit a candidate who has failed one subject or half subject to re-sit that subject only at the next examination sitting, but such a candidate shall not be eligible for the award of an LLM degree with distinction.
Examinations are held in the Autumn only.
