Exam tips:
▪ RDS- find out which part of RDS you will be in and how to get there
▪ Allow extra time for travel as it is very busy during exam periods
▪ Must sit in allocated seat number and MUST have UCD student card
▪ Shuttle bus from UCD
▪ Written(essay style)/MCQ*/short-answer
▪ Read the whole exam paper first, then start
▪ Keep an eye on the time
▪ Know how many questions there is on the paper, and how many you have
to answer
▪ Make sure to have enough stationary

▪ Uniforms
▪ Black shoes (fashionable shoes are not comfortable, comfortable shoes are not
fashionable!!)
▪ Black/navy socks
▪ Name badge, epaulettes (yellow)

▪ Clean ironed uniform
▪ Do not wear your uniform to or from placement (Infection control)
▪ Keep hair tied back off your face at all times
▪ Minimal makeup
▪ No nail polish/keep nails cut short
▪ No jewellery (?small stud earrings only)

Placement tips:
▪ Be on time and return on time from break, lunch, reflection
▪ Use of mobile phones not permitted on the ward
▪ Breaking test results
▪ Confidentiality-shred handover, don’t discuss pts. outside hospital
with anyone
▪ Professional manner at all times towards all staff, patients and
visitors
▪ If you are not sure how to do something please ask a staff nursesafe practice is critical
▪ Remember Scope of Practice and Code of Conduct at all times

Social Media and the 6 p’s:
▪ Extremely careful use of social media (NMBI (2013) guidelines on social
media)
▪ Professional- Act professionally at all times.
▪ Person-free; patient-free: Keep posts patient or person free.
▪ Positive: Keep posts positive.
▪ Protect yourself-Protect your professionalism, your reputation and
yourself
▪ Privacy: Keep your personal and professional life separate. Check your
privacy settings and respect privacy of others
▪ Pause before you post: Consider the implications of what you’re posting.
Avoid posting in haste or in anger. Don’t respond to other posts in haste.

Accident and Emergency (A &E)-2 weeks, very different to ward placements

Theatre- 4 weeks, (urology and PACU)

Psychiatry/Mental Health- 2 weeks

8 week Medical or surgical placement in 3rd year
