Learner Resource 4 Instructions – Print out and cut into strips, giving one strip to each student. 20 strips have been included – you may need to add more for bigger groups, or give some student 2 strips if your class is small. Ask who has a strip that says start. Ask that student to read the question on the right hand side of their strip. The class member with the correct answer should say the answer and then read their question. This should continue until you get back to the student who started the loop. This activity requires full concentration and participation of all class members. Aquaporins Start. Which blood vessels carry blood to and from the kidney? Renal artery and vein Name the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. Ureter Name the two main regions within the kidney. Cortex and medulla What is the functional unit within the kidney producing urine? The nephron What are the 3 main processes required for the production of urine? Ultra-filtration, selective reabsorption and osmoregulation What is the nitrogenous waste product excreted in urine? Version 1 Kidney functions and malfunctions 1 © OCR 2016 Urea What is urea produced from? Excess amino acids How is high blood pressure produced within the glomerulus? Afferent arteriole is wider than efferent arteriole What components of blood do not enter the Bowman’s capsule? Blood cells and large blood proteins List 3 useful substances within the renal filtrate that need to be reabsorbed. Glucose, amino acids, salts, water List substances that are not reabsorbed. Urea, drugs, alcohol, hormones How are substances selectively reabsorbed? Diffusion and active transport due to the presence of protein carriers in membranes of cells lining the proximal tubule How is water reabsorbed back into the blood from the renal filtrate? Version 1 Kidney functions and malfunctions 2 © OCR 2016 By osmosis Name the hormone that controls the amount of water reabsorption. Anti diuretic hormone What is the role of the loop of Henle? To produce a region of low water potential (a high salt concentration) within the medulla. What is the effect of increasing ADH levels on the nephron? The walls of the ascending limb become more water-permeable so more water is reabsorbed preventing it being lost from the body in urine. Name the proteins that increase in number in the collecting duct cell membranes to enable more water reabsorption.
