Unit 9: Mechanical Design LO1: Be able to use graphical and engineering drawing techniques to communicate design solutions Isometric Projections Instructions and answers for teachers These instructions should accompany the OCR resource ‘Isometric Projections’ activity which supports Cambridge Technicals in Engineering Level 3. The Activity: This activity offers an This activity offers an opportunity for English opportunity for maths skills development. skills development. ! Suggested timings: 1–2 hours Version 1 ! Activity 1: Depending on the level of previous experience and confidence learners can be provided with a page of isometric paper which when placed under a blank sheet can be used several times for tracing purposes. A 30 degree set square can be used instead of isometric paper or as a next step after learners gain confidence in isometric drawing techniques. The link below contains an interesting short video on isometric drawing basics accompanied by links containing some additional isometric drawing exercises and isometric paper templates: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/drawing-gym/video/film-2-isometric-drawing/ Step by step solutions for question a) and b) can be found at: a) http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/isocube1.htm b) http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/isocube4.htm In terms of question c) there is no particular solution presented as it follows the same step by step pattern and questions a) and b). Teachers could add further isometric drawing examples. Version 1 Activity 2: Isometric Projection of a circle Learners can use isometric paper or a 30 degree set square to assist with drawing of the isometric projection of the circle. A step by step procedure for drawing the circle is shown in the link below: http://www.slideshare.net/teachmacao/isometric-circles-2 Teachers could develop further isometric drawing exercises for learners to practice the technique.
