1.1

Identify spoken information from explanations or presentations that is relevant to purpose and context

Assessor question: Candidate identifies information from the explanation or presentation that directly relates to the purpose and context. For example, the candidate can correctly identify relevant dates, meeting places and meeting preparation from an explanation about a meeting with an employer.

2.1 Identify introductions, detail and conclusions in explanations and narrative of varying lengths

Assessor question: Candidate identifies how the explanation or narrative is structured by identifying spoken words, phrases or paragraphs which indicate the introduction, the detail and conclusion. In some spoken pieces, these may not be in the order of introduction, detail and conclusion .

3.1 Use non-verbal and verbal prompts to confirm information has been understood

Assessor observation/question: Candidate uses facial expressions, body language and gestures to show that they understand spoken pieces and questions.

Candidate uses verbal prompts to confirm understanding. For example, assessor observes candidate nodding and using open body language that confirms understanding. Candidate confirms understanding by using confirmatory words or phrases such as I see, go on, etc.

3.2 Use non-verbal and verbal prompts to indicate lack of understanding

Assessor observation/question: Candidate uses facial expressions, body language and gestures to show that they do not understand spoken pieces and questions. Candidate uses verbal prompts to identify a lack of understanding. For example, assessor observes candidate shaking their head, frowning and using closed body language that indicates a lack of understanding. Candidate identifies a lack of understanding by using words or phrases such as I didn’t quite follow that, I don’t understand the last point, etc.

3.3 Use non-verbal and verbal prompts to indicate clarification is needed

Assessor observation/question: Candidate identifies a need for clarification by using non-verbal prompts such as raising a finger to interrupt or request a pause etc. Candidate uses verbal prompts such as can you say that again, could you explain that point, etc.

4.1 Respond to questions with an appropriate amount of detail for the context and topic

Assessor question: Candidate responds to questions using an appropriate amount of detail relevant to the context and topic, For example, a question about interests in the context of an interview will require a different level of detail to a question about hobbies from a friend.
