Use verbal clues to help identify the subject and main points from short explanations, descriptions or narratives
Assessor question: Candidate uses verbal clues such as use of repetition, tone of voice, key words (such as nouns and proper nouns, simple adjectives) and
sequencing markers in narratives (such as first, then, last) to identify the subject and main points made by the speaker. Candidate is not expected to recount
detail.

Identify specific detail in short explanations
Assessor question: Candidate uses linking words such as because, the reason for, so that, to identify specific detail such as times, places, actions etc. when
questioned.
3.1
Respond in correct order to sequential markers in multi-step instructions
Assessor question: Candidate uses sequential markers in instructions, such as first, first of all, firstly, at the beginning, secondly, then, next, after a while,
meanwhile, finally, last of all, in the end, to identify where a particular instruction should occur in relation to the whole set of instructions. For example, a set
of instructions identifies that last of all... Candidate should respond correctly to question what would you do at the end…or what would you do after...

Identify when someone is expressing a positive or negative feeling
Assessor question: Candidate listens to narrative, explanation or description and identifies whether overall speaker is being positive or negative.

Identify when someone is expressing an opinion
Assessor question: Candidate uses markers that indicate an opinion is being expressed (such as ‘I think/I think that’, ‘In my opinion’, ‘in my view’) to identify
when the speaker is expressing an opinion.
5.1
Identify meaning from non-verbal communication
Assessor question: Candidate observes non-verbal communication (such as facial expression, gestures) and correctly identifies the meaning. For example,
smiling indicates positive meaning, shrug of shoulders indicates lack of knowledge/commitment etc.
6.1
Use non-verbal responses for emphasis when answering direct questions
Assessor observation/question: Candidate responds appropriately to direct questions from the assessor, responding only with facial expressions or gestures
(no speaking). For example, nodding and shaking of head to match verbal response, shrugging of shoulders.
