I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course:

A written report based on an independent, in-depth scientific investigation in environmental science. (1-3)

II. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the graduate program in Environmental Science and consent of the student's Thesis Committee.

III. Purposes or Objectives of the Course:

A. To provide the student with the opportunity to conduct an in-depth scientific investigation.

B. To allow the student to develop some expertise in experimental design, data collection, and evaluation of results.

C. To provide the student with experience in presenting the research in appropriate written form.

IV. Expectations of Students:

The student is expected to plan the thesis project in consultation with the Thesis Advisor and with the approval of the Thesis Committee. This planning process should include an appropriate survey of the scientific literature. Periodic evaluative conferences will be conducted by the Thesis Advisor. A thesis, written in the proper format and approved by the Thesis Committee, is required. An oral examination on the thesis is required.

V. Course Content:

There is no fixed schedule or specific course content. The Thesis Plan (see the

Graduate Bulletin) must be adhered to closely. Initial approval, prior planning, and close cooperation and consultation with the Thesis Advisor and Committee are all essential to the successful completion of a thesis project. It is worth noting that thesis projects always require extensive hours of investigation.

Credit hours for the thesis course will be determined by the student’s Thesis Committee.

VII. Basis of Student Evaluation: A grade in the course will be based on several criteria:

A. The planning and execution of the thesis project

B. The final written copy of the thesis

C. The oral examination
