Catalog Description and Credit Hours: A supervised experiential learning opportunity in environmental science which enhances the student’s comprehension of applied environmental concepts and skills. (1-3) II. Prerequisite(s) Admission to the graduate program in Environmental Science; the internship learning site must exhibit a demonstrated relationship to environmental science; approval of Program internship coordinator. III. Purpose or Objectives of the Course: A. To provide students with an opportunity to develop experiential knowledge of the tasks and skills of practicing environmental science professionals. B. To provide students with an opportunity to develop first hand experience with the field for general knowledge purposes. C. To provide students with an opportunity to interact with environmental science professionals and to develop an understanding of the roles of interpersonal relationships in environmental science professional positions. D. To provide students with an opportunity to develop a broad perspective of the field of environmental science in order for them to better make intelligent career choices. E. To provide students with an opportunity to develop professional competencies which permit program graduates to enter the field in a productive role with minimum orientation and training by the employer. IV. Expectations of Students: Students are expected to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined in the “Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of Academic Internship Programs” (University Handbook) and established in the Environmental Science Program’s Internship Evaluation Handbook. These expectations include: a written contract between the student, on-site supervisor, and the Program internship coordinator regarding work to be completed during the internship and submission of a special project report describing the internship experience following completion of the internship. Students will also be evaluated at the midpoint and end of the internship by the on-site supervisor. V. Course Content or Outline: No specific content or outline is provided. Student performance expectations and special project description will be drawn up as a written contract to be signed by the agency/organization on-site supervisor, Environmental Science Program internship coordinator, and the student. The agreement will be maintained by the Program Internship coordinator. Credit hours for the internship course will be determined on the basis of a minimum of 40 hours of internship work per academic credit hour. VI. Textbooks: None is required unless it is included in the initial contract agreement. The student will be expected to provide materials customarily provided by individuals performing the duties of the internship. VII. Basis of Student Evaluation: The Program internship coordinator’s evaluation will be based on the achievement of contract expectations, on-site supervisor’s student evaluations, and completion of a special project report.
